My hometown newspaper has a competition every Mother's Day... This is what I'm submitting:
Jeff and I are lucky to have such a cool mom.
Mom was forced into a mother-type role at age 12 when her mother (Flora Mae Sturgis, a nurse just like Mom) passed away from complications from a routine surgery. Mom looked after her two younger brothers, a huge responsibility at such a young age.
In fact when her brothers graduated high school, they were without direction. She told them she needed help moving into the SWOSU dorms. They didn’t plan on doing much that year, let alone attending college. Well, Mom sneakily scheduled their enrollment the day they helped move. Her two brothers got serious about their studies, graduated, and became successful. In fact, Steve has been a Physician for 23 years, and just recently was named Oklahoma’s Best Family Physician.
It’s that encouragement that Mom has carried throughout her life to her patients. She’s been featured as Oklahoma’s Nurse of the Month by KWTV-9 and Employee of the Year at Bass Hospital. However, her talent as a mother exceeds her nursing abilities. She skipped her nursing school graduation to take her relatively un-athletic son to a 3rd grade soccer game.
Mom sees the positives in situations: cheering me up after a bad exam, cooking for 100 Falls Creekers, or waking up to help patients at 3 am. She’ll laugh in agreement that I’ve caused her much stress in 23 years (and will continue to, count on it), but she’s always stood with me and I’ll forever be thankful.
