Is there a program where I can play checkers with my out of state friend via the web?

One of my friends moved away last year, and he and I want to play checkers over the web. Anybody know if this is possible?

Just use the same reference system that long-distance chess players use, A1-H8, and play via email, each with his own board set up at home, tracking the changes.

Hmmmmm. Yahoo IMing won't work on my PC, so I use meebo to chat on yahoo, but I never tried MSN. I suppose I should see if MSN will work.

Thanks everybody

You don't need Yahoo Messenger, just go to Yahoo Games to same checkers room and one of you invite the other to a game and you should be good to go. I just to use Yahoo Games years ago to play backgammon with a friend of mine.

Thanks KT. Problem is, I can't seem to get yahoo games to work either. Looks like I need to get my computer expert friends to help me. Problem is, my main computer dork friend is vacationing in Miami.

The old-fashioned way always works. See post #2. But it's not like playing on the computer. It's, uh, only like using a real checkerboard with real checkers. Not very seksay for today's computer-oriented youth.

You are right Vega, but the main issue is time. My buddy is doing 60 hours a week with 2 different jobs, while going to school. I personally am about to be almost as busy. Certainly it will remain an option if we end up not liking any of the other options, but we would like to crank out as many games as possible with our limited free time.

Is "checkers" some sort of obscure euphemism for something that I don't really want to know about?

Yahoo Games requires the JavaVM from SUN Microsystems. Microsoft unbundled Java support from Windows back when Win2000 came out. Probably couldn't beat up on SUN like they could on the smaller developers. Anyway, go to the Java download page and get the latest runtime. Run it after it downloads to install. Be sure to pick both IE and Firefox options.

Then go to the Yahoo Games - Checkers board. Start a new game with your YahooID and invite your friend to join. That's it.
