a gift for my sister?

My sister's graduating from med school on Monday. So... what can I get as a present for little sis'? Within reason, I don't care what it costs. It is her terminal degree, after all. But it should preferably be something that will last her a lifetime (or at least a decade). Shopping for my sisters is hard work... they seem to have everything already. I'd buy her a bike, except she has no interest in getting a bike. (She was offered my Specialized Roubaix when I decided to get rid of it, but she didn't want it.)

I'm e-mailing her to ask her if she has any requests, but I reserve the right to override her choice and get her something of my choosing. So... what to get for little sis'?

I gave my "non blood" sister something that I found in an antique store, after looking through 2-3 stores with my auntie. Took me awhile of staring at it to know I wanted to get it.

Jade. The circle with her name custom done in Chinese 24k gold lettering in the center. Lavender Jade that is not heat treated is more rare. And it protects her. It would have meaning now that she is officially free to be "out on her own" so to speak.

Thanks for the ideas so far. My sister doesn't need cash. She's got no debt and plenty of savings. No need for a doctor. Her med school boyfriend will do just fine. A vacation? She and my other sister (graduating with a non-terminal degree) are already taking a nice vacation that my parents are paying for. (She sure is hard to shop for, huh? Why can't she be like my other sister? If that sister were graduating with her terminal degree, I'd just buy her a celeste-colored Bianchi roadie or something along those lines.)

I haven't a clue about jade, but I could see that working. I'd definitely have a lot of homework to do to figure out what exactly to get her, though.

Get her a bike and give it to me. Never too young to start learning about charitable giving. 56 or 58 cm. roadie, traditional geometry.

Scroll down for the meaning. It general, it protects your life (in all aspects)

My sister has made her requests. She asked for me to buy the diploma frame for her med school degree. Sure, I can do that. I asked if she wants anything else. She asked for the diploma frame for her undergrad degree. Sure, that's fine too. I asked if there was anything else. She has a wish list of potential restaurants in San Francisco she might want to dine at if given the chance. Anyone know anything about any of the following restaurants? They're in order of her preference.

Aqua
Acquerello
Chez Panisse
Sushi Ran

My sister went to Chez Panisse... I remember her saying that it was OK, but not nearly worth the hype. I can ask her for more info, if you like.

Does your sister have a favourite animal? Perhaps a jade pendant of that animal would be something to consider. Or some kind of antique something. Or what about a weekend spa treatment?

When in doubt, buy a nice fountain pen....either get a congratulations screened into the lid of the box, or have it engraved with something for her.

How about a nice watch? Though, from the sounds of it, she probably already has one. There are companies that will make a custom face plate or put an engraving on the back of the watch.

What about a piece of jewelry with a caduceus theme?

http://www.specialty-jewelry.com/spec-med.htm
http://www.jewelbasket.com/jbexch179.html (maybe a bit too "flashy")

Or a Vermont Teddy Bear?

http://shop.vermontteddybear.com/doctor.html

Crystal?

Don't just get a simple frame for her diplomas, get them engraved!

http://www.laserengravedmemories.com...m-Diplomas.htm

And since you did say you didn't care what it costs (within reason... and this is reasonable for its capabilities!)... what doctor couldn't do without their very own jet aircraft?

http://www.eclipseaviation.com/?gcli...FQuQGgodcjFp6Q

PS: If you get her this, can I apply to be adopted as your sibling??

How about a book?
Not a Stephen King one, but a serious medical book, old and rare.

Or how about some sort of antique medical 'thing', without blood on it, something that might be a talking point in her office (does she get an office).

Or you could get her a cane and an attitude like 'House'.

Like some of the guys said, send her on a short trip to somewhere to get some R&R first.

If Grey's Anatomy taught me anything, its that rookie doctor's life is tough! ... all that love triangles and what not

Parents are covering the vacation already. Already has a nice watch. Longtime friend already covered the spa trip. As for the private plane, I'll save the money for when skiah becomes related to me... he'd appreciate it more. Teddy bear would be silly... her favorite stuffed animal is ducks, and there's no room on her bed for more stuffed animals anyway.

As for an engraved frame, she already picked out the frames she wants and I went ahead and got them already. I think I'll just buy her some restaurant trip and call it quits at that.
