Bad news about ugly puppy.

When I got home from work, she was listless. Out of it. She wouldn't eat or drink and was throwing up constantly. I was trying to give her water via eyedropper, she had enough energy to swallow and her eyes were barely open. The lady from the rescue said that if there were any problems, to call her - I called her as I was getting ready to take her to the vet.

On my way there she called me back and said that to have the dr call her, for she wanted to know what is going on with her. She gave the dr her credit card number to pay for the emergency visit. (So generous of her!)

She tested positive for Parvovirus and said it would be thousands to treat her, and MAYBE she will live.

Definitions of Parvovirus on the Web:

A highly contagious febrile disease of canines and especially dogs that is caused by a parvovirus (genus Parvovirus), is spread especially by contact with infected feces, and is marked by loss of appetite, lethargy, often bloody diarrhea and vomiting, and sometimes death called also parvo.

The dr and the rescue lady could not agree on treatment so she asked me to meet her halfway and she will hospitalize her at the rescue foundation's hospital. She is four hours from me. I was back home at 1130pm.

So now the puppy is with her. I hope she survives.

I'm really really bummed right now.

I had a puppy that had parvo.
One solid week of intravenous fluids/feeding later (and $700) he came through it like a champ, and was a great dog for over 10 years.

From what I understand, any food or water taken orally causes the intestines to be "scoured" and the virus begins attacking the next layer of tissue. Hence the only way to cure them is to withhold food and water - which of course will cause the dog to die from dehydration.

I don't know why your vet said it would cost $1000's!

It's just glucose and saline fercrissake!

Nasty stuff, Siu. Whatever treatment you, the rescue lady and dr. choose, it will be the right decision.

Yeah, but she needs hospitalization, supportive therapy, and monitoring- that's where the real costs are.

Hugs to you Siu and especially the pup- this is a real drag, I know. We had a cat with feline urinary syndrome some time ago- had to be treated by a vet urologist (wow...) and a lot of money later, he lived a long (and preciously annoying, because he was a silver spotted tabby and they're related to lynxes- they're wild) life. Only you can make the decision, but I'm sure you'll do what's best.

Sui

Sorry about the problem. I have a rescue GSP and he is doing fine. Hopefully your pup will be doing fine in a while. I believe the cost is mostly care so the lady from rescue can probably provide it.

Sorry to hear that Siu. Seems life keeps throwing you all kinds of unpleasant twists sometimes. It's all such a PITA, isn't it? It's all for a reason. You're strong, you'll pull through, hope the mutt does too.

Aww, Siu.

I'm sorry it worked out this way. I hope you, the vet, and the rescue worker are able to get her back on her feet and wagging her tail.

Bike packer, I'm glad your dog made it, that sort of gives me hope.

The cost is due to 24 hour care, like MTB said. I don't care about the cost, I will find a way. Even if it means putting the Moots on hold. That's a no brainer.

My whole point in taking her home was to save her life. And if I wasn't ready to go against everything for her then I shouldn't have made the commitment.

I'm just pretty stressed and bummed right now. I hope she's okay.

The doctor asked why the lady would drive two hours late at nite just to meet me and to take her in. (???)

He is new at this hospital. He didn't even take her temp or weight and they pulled out my other dog's records and said "Oh she had her shots", so it's not Parvo. It has to be an obstruction of her intestine. (???) I told him that was my OTHER dog's files. See? It says that Sooty is 7 years old. This one is new. It's her first time here. Then he couldn't read or comprehend the shot record for ugly puppy. The lady had to tell him three times she had her first shot only. I am seriously thinking about changing hospitals. And I had been to them for over 19 years.

One of my childhood cats had FCV (feline calici virus) which is about as malevolent as parvo. She lived to be a ripe old 21 year old kitty. A friend of mine recently went through the Parvo thing with his dog, and he pulled though. Lots and lots of attention, steroids, IV fluids, etc though.

Best of luck, Siu.

So sorry Siu - throwing some prayers and healing thoughts!

Does parvo need boosters? Make sure the others are up to date!

One vet can make a huge difference. Find out how long he's been there and I'd write a letter of complaint - if he can't read the chart and jumps to conclusions that's not the kind of care that they nor I'm sure any other customers want.

Oh, Siu -- I don't know what to say other than I'm hoping for the best. Dogs attach themselves to you (and vice versa) so quickly, and it's so hard to see them sick like this. Hope you hear good news soon. ((hugs))
