Selling stuff on Craigslist.

Tips? I have a few frames and alot of parts I need to get rid of, so I am thinking of building something and selling it on Craigslist. Never done it before, I could use some advice.

Always include a picture. I don't even bother to open ads that don't have pictures.

For frames, list the size of the frame. Do not list it as "good for riders between 5'5" to 6'2" " I actually saw an ad like that.

List a price, even if you intend to negotiate. The price is a starting point. If I don't know where the seller's starting point is, I don't waste my time.

You could probably make more money by parting then by putting it all together.

This is not much of a cycling city [just look at how many bikes get posted - few, and they are mostly junkers] so parts by themselves won't sell.

Yeah I will include pictures. Seat tube in inches and ground to top tube in inches for the sizing.

The main thing I want to do is get more bikes out on the streets. People may not want to buy that shiny new bike because it will be stolen, or get that overpriced junker, but wait lookey there a nice bike for not too much.

Make flyers and post at the colleges in town. There's Tulane and University of New Orleans, right?

If using CL, I'd use a disposable E-mail alias (I personally use a paid E-mail service that offers aliases that can be easily jettisoned), meet in a neutral location, and demand cash. If people try to foist off checks, tell them NO, because its pretty common for people writing checks to write works of fiction.

On second thought, the co-op may let me display the bike there. People always come in looking for complete bicycles and they dont do that anymore.

If you have a bicycle co-op, go with that. That is something Austin desperately needs, and supporting a local one can't hurt.

Be prepared to delete low-ballers that offer you half or less of your asking price.

Other than that I've had good success selling stuff on Craigslist. I even bought stuff off of there. I recently picked up a brand new Shimano Compact Crank for $130!

Good luck!

You'll frequently get people who say they're intersted, even setup a meeting with phone numbers, dates and locations and have them not show up. Maybe it's just Toronto though.

I've done many CL transactions, and they've always been smooth. Meet at a public place, inspect item and done.
