A scary trip to the vet. Give me strength.

I'm taking my baby (Sable) to the vet when they open. She's an almost 19 year old standard poodle (their avg. life span is about 16). She's been really slowing down the past few months and especially the the past couple of weeks. Now we haven't been able to get her to eat at all for a couple of days, even treats. I'm really scared this is it. She's been with me through two wives and some time alone when it was just me her and DC. DC was a cat I had for 15 years and had to put to sleep about a year ago. I was a basket case then and I will be when Sable goes. I need all the strength I can get.

Awww, crap dude. My condolences. I suppose one consolation would be that at least she's had a good innings. It's always hard to lose a pet, and in this case I can see why it's going to be difficult for you. At least you'll be prepared.

<hugs>

SoonerBent, I'm so sorry. Having just put my last dog to sleep last fall, I know what you must be going through. It's a horribly hard decision, but if it's the right thing to do it's the right thing to do, and you can take comfort in knowing that you eased her suffering and she didn't have to go alone or in pain. That's really all any of us can hope for.

I'm so, so sorry.

Call me selfish but when I had RZ he had a hard time eating when he got old, too. I gave him anything he wanted - he earned it. I tried not to look at that day when it was time to go but even with his fading eyesight, his deaf ears and his decreasing ability to walk or stand without a wobble he still would bring that ball to me so I can throw it. I just couldn't do it. I couldn't let him go. He stayed with me for about another year.

With this whole ordeal with my new puppy, I was feeling like the first doctor was ready to "receive" the puppy and I wasn't to get her back. But I wasn't ready. So I demanded we try and now it looks better than it was even though we are not "out of the woods" quite yet.

You know deep inside when it is time, and she will know it through your eyes. The thing that pulled me through was remembering how great he made my life. And how lucky I was that he is a part of me. ((Hugs)) to you.

Sable might be fine, but if not then my deepest condolences.

I was pretty conked out when I lost my two bunnies, even though I wasn't that close to 'em since they aren't as interactive as a cat or a dog, but I was still pretty sad since they were quite young.

Anyways I just biked a lot on trails, where I could be alone and carefree (read: "no traffic"). I just eventually got out of the rut and felt it was time to move one and get another pet (which may not be the choice you make, who knows?), and I got another bunny. Sad thing is that I regret getting my current bun. I am a cat person - I love my roommate's cat and the stray cat that lives around our apartment plus its hard to have a new pet live up to a previous pet.

Whatever may be the case for you, you will get through it.

Best of luck to you.

Sooner. I very well know how you feel. Such losses takes time to heal. Pets can be a more reliable friend than many people. I recall the last day we had with our Poodle. He had heart congestive problems. The vet said he'd only last a week.
The last day he was ok, I put him within his basket and walked him about the neigborhood. He loved his walks. He still had the energy to peek over the rim and see the sights. he was in pain, tho. The doctor remined us, his life is not worth living. As we got him inside the door and put him in his basket he licked us both on the hands as we petted him.
With time, we realized we did him a favor. Somethimes i'd be better if humans could get such relief from their pain. With time and healing you can get another pet and give that pet the same name. I look at the picture of Freddie with a smile, after all these years.
When the doctor gave him his shot, he just closed his eyes and went to sleep. no more pain. No more wimpering and crying. Friends say we should have done that deed a couple weeks earlier.

Thanks everyone. She's at the vet now. He's doing tests and observing her for a few hours. From that we'll decide what's next. The worst part about this is seeing her eyes. She's always been a smart dog and her mind's still there. She wants to run, jump and play but the body just won't do it anymore. I hope she gets through this. I'd really like to see her make 19 in October. But, I love her too much to keep her barely going if it's just for me. When it's her time I'll let her go.

PS Siu, I'm glad to hear your puppy is doing better. She'll be fine. And I don't think she's ugly at all.

Soonerbent, this is always a difficult fork in the road with regard to pets. Whichever way you go, you are in my thoughts, and I send strength and support your way.

Good advice on riding the bike. Really helped me in my worst months of bereavement. Still does. Whatever happens today, get on your bike and take a long ride. It works wonders to clear head and heart of sorrow, if only for a while. Then repeat as necessary. Must be why I'm gettin' stronger and faster -- I ride a lot.

((hugs))

Edit: Yes, the eyes. I totally understand. My husband could no longer move anything but his eyes. His ability to move was gone, but his mind was still there, and his eyes could express so much. He could still communicate with me via a letterboard, and tell me his thoughts. He wanted to live, but he had much more complex reasons (grandchildren, etc.), and could reason out how continuing to exist could be ok for him. I'm really not sure how Sable regards her condition, but to have lived beyond the average life expectancy for a poodle is a tribute to your love and excellent guardianship, regardless of the choice you make in the next few days.

Good news so far!

The lab tests show that all the vital organs are still working OK. The vet's giving her fluids and some meds to try to settle her stomach and ease the diahrrea. If that works and we can get her to eat she'll be around for a little while longer. If not then it's just her time. I'm keepng everything crossed.
