    cicadas

anyone in the chicago area have any large cicada infestations yet?
there are a million holes in my yard, and tons of their shells stuck to trees, but i have not seen that many live ones yet. im sure they will be coming down from the trees soon. i hated those when i was little, but now i odnt mind, but we will see once they are all flying around. when that happens, ill post some pics.

One hit my mom in the head and fell in the pool. I used it for my bug project freshman yr. They're noise at night!

I haven't seen or heard any yet in Wicker Park, although it's been raining off and on all day.

Ha! The Walter E. Smithe Cicada Sale ad was just on!

    This is Brood XIII.
These little critters have been burrowing around underground since 1990.
Offspring from this summer's "pairings" will emerge in 2024.

We only have the Annual or Dog Day cicadas, here in Texas. They are larger than the periodical or 17 year cicadas, and green with black eyes as opposed to black with red eyes.
One of them attached itself to my kids' insect net, on our front porch and began molting. At one point, it fell off the netting and I hung it back in place.

It was really cool to see the veins in its wing fill up with fluid, as they unfurled.

I'm going to have to go out for a ride and find some, 'cause they certainly aren't in the city right now! Maybe they are scared off by this weekend's International Mr. Leather competition. Now in it's 29th year.

    The cicadas remember!

I'm in the northern suburbs and we have a bunch, the majority of them came out today.

My dog can't stop eating them.

I haven't seen any on the west side of Chicago. Is it bad that they cicadas creep me out especially when they emerge from their shells?

Why do they have red eyes?? I don't like red eyes. Anything with red eyes freaks me out.
