Woodpecker problem (bird not cider)

My house is being attacked by a woodpecker. I hate to kill it, but I don't know what else to do. I've turned the hose on it several times, and all that did is made it wary. It's a Downy Woodpecker, occasionally (twice this year) a Pileated has show up. That one I would not even bother since it's endangered but the one that is beating its head on my back door right now.....It's got to go.

windsock or aluminum foil strips hanging in damage areas?

I like the idea of playing a woodpecker distress call followed by a predator call. Seems cool to use the birds own calls against it.

Thanks, Jeff.
I like the sound idea as well, yelling has been the method of choice to run him off.
He's smart, if I have the hose, he's gone, no hose and he'll let me approach a little.

Is he like the peckerwoods around my house that wait until the weekend to start hammering on the flashing around the chimney right about daylight?

Nope, he's a PITA all week. Thankfully they are not nocturnal.

Or you have some aggressive and weird crack heads in your neck of the woods.

I love woodpeckers, don't kill it please Use a distress call / predator call to divert it away.

He will get over it in a bit. They will find the loudest thing they can hammer on to call a mate. What you need to do is get him involved in a dating service.

Not for nothing, but get a super soaker. The you can sneak up on him and wet him, but it won't hurt him. This may be a stupid idea, but do they have some sort of bird house that woodpeckers like? maybe you can get him one. ( oh wait, then he'll have little peckers and you'll come home from work one day and find a pile of sawdust where your house used to be) Forget it.

Allen, I think the Audobon Society could help you out. Is there a chapter remotely nearby?

You don't want to hurt it, most woodpecker species are in enough trouble. A cat's not a good idea. The recording that jsharr suggested is !!. Those woodpeckers are busters, peckerhead is a fitting desciption.

Somebody told me shaving cream is the cure. He does not like to stick the beak in anything sticky. The advice was to cover the area he is after with shaving cream and he will leave.

I would put aftershave on the side just in case

I bought a couple of dozen pin wheels at the dollar store and stapled them on the soffits. We'll see how it works. My house looks tacky now. I desperately need some pink flamingos to balance things out.

He's probably trying to get a date with one of those flamingos. (Woodpeckers are psychic).
