I got a new toy today, ever since I was 12 years old I've wanted one of these but I've never found a good one or one that is big enough. It's a 1983 Honda 185 ATC. It really is a handful to control, especially on trails, I've been trying a damn easy one all day and still cannot get to the top. It's not because it tips or wheelies, but because it pulls HARD to the right, to the point where I am fighting the bars to go to the left. The fork appears straight as do the bars, so I would imagine because it has the chain drive on the right side, throttle on the right side and brake on the right side it pulls that way because of the torque, although I could be wrong. It has 5 speeds and goes to about 70km/h, although turning much above 30 is definatley out of the question, not to mention the sound of the tires on concrete is louder then the engine and is mentally crippling.





I also picked up this helmet the other day for it too, the visor is after market but it really makes the helmet stand out.

That should be a solid rear axle. If only thright wheel is turning, I'd suspect a broken axle.

A friend of mine used to have the exact same one, until he died riding it. Luckily, he was revived after 2 1/2 minutes.

Stacey, you raised a good enough point that I just went out and jacked the back end up and spun the wheels, they both turned so it isn't the axle.

Good, is the right tire noticably softer than the left? That should pull straight turning right and left with similar instability. Nice looking ride for it's age.

Nope, both sitting at 8psi, but I did notice the right side of the bars is _SLIGHTLY_ lower (bent), but not to much, maybe 3/16.

It is in good condition for it's age, the lady who I bought it from had it new since '83. It has a few quirks (no back brakes and a weird idle) but overall it's good.

I'm still a bit scared to wheelie it to far, although when I really flog it it wheelies every time I shift up until 3rd.

By the way, Stacey got it right. I went out and checked the tires with another gauge and the tires were way different on each side. I'll rip it later and see if it's any different .

Maybe it's just the angle of the photo, but in the second picture, the front tire doesn't appear to be plumb. If it's angled just a bit, wouldn't that contribute to a pull?

Nah, optical illusion, I saw that in the photo and then went out and checked it and it's right on. Same with the back end, right wheel looks a bit twisted but it isn't.

They sure are, a friend of the family has a 300 with a snorkel and a HUGE airbox, you can drive it under water for about 30 seconds. It kicks ass, I've offered to buy it but it isn't worth what he's asking. I would have actually preferred to get a 200 but this was to good of a deal, hell, I've wanted one so bad I've even considered a few of the 90's that have popped up every so often.

I took it for a longer ride tonight and scared the **** out of myself a few times, I finally got to the top of the trail after flipping once, tomorrow is going to be a longer ride (most likely all day) and I am not looking forward to the first hour or so. I have to go back up that hill again and most likely flip again, then I have a pretty steep rock face I have to crawl down, and only my front brake works. Thank great zombie jesus I have a low first gear and can engine brake it.

Plus all of it may be in vain, because I have to cross a bridge that I don't know if I'll fit over, and if I don't I have to wait a month till the creek settles down and I can ride through it.
