Social Security card substitute?

I can't find my SS card. My parents keep all documents in an office, filed away. I told them I need my original birth certificate and SS card for the DMV. In just a minute, I've got my birth certificate. But my SS card doesn't seem to be there . I'll be searching that room top to bottom, but in the even that I can't find it, does anybody know of any substitutes for a SS card that the DMV might accept?

Strange... technically, a SSN card is not a valid form of identification. You'd think your NH birth certificate would suffice for a NH DL.

Do you have a local SSA office? They can print you up a new one in short order, I think.

I have a NH license and it really annoys me that they require your SSN to be kept on file in their computers... because no state computers have ever been compromised.

I think that Skiahh is pretty much right on the money here. It's been years ago now, but I had to get a new SS card also, and if memory serves it seems that I had a new one in short order. I think that because it is federal, it should be the same no matter what state your in, but since 9/11, I would say that you should not even worry about looking first...just go get the paperwork started on at the SSA office and then go home and take a look around, if you find it..super, now you have a back-up and can get right off to the DMV. If you don't find it, you haven't wasted precious time.

Well I have two expired passports, if that counts for anything. I've got a school ID w/ photo, and my birth certificate. Also, I've got the receipt that came with the SS card shortly after I was born.

ALright, I am bringing some extra things with me. One, a paystub. This has the last 4 digits of my SS #. Also, my tax return. Has my name and SS # right next to each other, and that is straight from the IRS.

My experience is that if they say you need an SS card, they really mean it. It's idiotic -- that's possibly the easiest to forge document in the world and it's worthless. I didn't even have a card for over 10 yrs (though I did have a number). The last 3 places of employment I was at actually required the card. Previous places let me just give the number.

You need to get another one issued. Are they still printing them on stock that's just barely more durable than toilet paper?

In NJ, the DMV now uses a point system, here's a link to it (PDF), not NH but it gives you an idea of what value a DMV places on certain items (Need 6 points, get 4 points for birth certificate and expired Passport, less points for school ID and transcripts, etc...). Might want to hold onto those expired Passports if one is recent...

Well, I've gotten info on what the DMV needs from 3 sources and gotten 2 different answers.
My drivers ed teacher and the lady on the phone I spoke to from the DMV both said I need an SS card. hey When I check the DMV official website, they said simply that I need "One of the following forms of identification". A passport is one of them, and an SS card is another. THere's a few others that don't apply, such as marriage certificate or military ID.

ALright, quote from the NH.gov website:
Proof of identification - One of the following:

Social Security Card
Passport
Marriage Certificate
Military discharge papers
Military identification card
Divorce Decree
Valid School ID w/photo

I printed out that page. So if they give me a hard time, I can say that I have got all their information from the official website from the NH Dept. of Safety website (which the DMV is a part of). I don't think they would accept my SS card anyways. The kind folks at SS actually made a typo on my card, and gave me the wrong #. Somehow, the IRS got ahold of only this wrong #. THen they tried to charge my parents with fraud, claiming they had a kid when they didn't (the # belongs to a guy who died in the 50's). After a small legal battle, we convinced them that I am who I say I am.

But you really do need to pursue getting a new SS card if yours is lost.

If you need one, like today...right now...on Sunday, go to the corner of 7th and Alvarado. Most anyone milling around at that corner can set you up with a new SS card, pronto!

If it's anything like the NC DMV, along with your two forms of ID they need proof of your SSN, which your passport should cover.

I may be remembering wrong, but I don't think you need to give them your SSN. But if you don't, you'll have to prove your identity every time you renew. It's blackmail for you to hand over the SSN.
