Computer help?

Okay, so I don't have a computer at home and I'm not really in the position to buy one but I need one.

I would like a laptop preferably. Anyone know of good sites to check some out??

Snowy

RetroBox.com sells used computers that have come off of business leases and stuff. I've never bought from there, but they seemed to have some good deals when I last looked.

If you go with Dell, they have an outlet page where they sell refurbs, or machines that were ordered and then cancelled and such. Have to check it often and early, but worth a shot.

My problem with is this, cheap computers you get what you pay for, my current laptop is a loaner.

When I get around to it I will buy the toshiba, the $600 laptops are not worth the money.

I got a factory refurbed Compaq laptop about... a year ago? I don't remember. It was about $700. Anyway, it's nothing special, but functionally it's been just fine. I can't say the same for Windows, since I wiped it off without ever booting into it.

I just got a Dell catalogue and their E1501 basic model is around $549. I've got the 1701 and think it's a very good laptop. I'll check to see if there's a discount code and send it to you if you want.

+1 My first/only laptop is a Toshiba (using it now) and I love it. When I recently bought my GF a laptop to replace her stolen one, I got her a Toshiba too.

I know at my company in FL, they had a deal where you could buy the computers that came up after lease for dirt cheap. I was able to get a decent system for like $100....I did that to get my brother and father brand new computers Xmas before last.

In this place, most work computers are laptops with docking stations. I'll try to look into it and see if they are available and how much. I'll PM you if I find out anything interesting.

If you're worried about data loss due to: viruses/spyware/adware, the laptops sold by System76 are virtually impervious to those problems, unlike most laptops sold by the major manufacturers.

If you have no idea what I'm talking about, buy one anyway.

Well, no, not really. No one's writing them for Linux yet but as its use spreads, you can bet that people will write them for Linux.

And then the AV/Anti-spyware vendors will come out with their products to counter.

Saying a laptop in and of itself is impervious is pretty naive, don't you think?

Saying that is usually only by 12 year olds and/or Linux evangelists.

Will your work sell you a used one for cheap?

My old work wouldn't sell computers to employees because they were afraid that a company secret might get out. So first, they destroyed tons of computers we wanted to donate to schools. Then, years later they decided to auction them off, yet they still wouldn't sell it to employees! WTF!?!?! Even the IT guys couldn't get one.

Yeah I like Dell.

I'm using an E1405 to type out this post. It's a nice laptop overall.

Just don't buy any upgrades except a bigger hard drive or a glossy screen or upgraded DVD drive (those can be a pain to install on some laptops). Memory upgrades are super easy to do, and you'll spend about half of what Dell will charge for that same upgrade....just ask foo when that day comes.

Mine was bone stock except the glossy screen ($20 upgrade) and it was shipped for just under $600, tax and all.

I must be a 12 y.o. then.

It's true! I'm guilty of being an evangelist! It must be the fact that I like using the software so much, I believe it in.

I apologize for posting a fallacy. It's true that in time, my statement may no longer be true. But as of today, I have yet seen a type of malware that affects non-Windows machines. This includes Apples. I'd vouch for them too, if they were less expensive and less prone to explosions.

Dell is a good choice as others have said. If you are a little proficient with computers, buy one and skip the options. You can get them cheaper at local stores. If you aren't that knowledgeable or don't want to mess around, buy the upgrades with the computer. Dell sends it to your door all ready to go.

You'll pay between $600 to $800 depending on memory, disk size, and a few oter things.

Watch this forum, if you check it regularly for a couple weeks, a smokin' deal (with or without coupon codes) will come up eventually.

http://www.fatwallet.com/c/18/

I got a laptop from dell that was retailing for 1600, for 800 from dell (EPP sale), by watching that forum

I just watch the Best Buy/Circuit City/Staples etc. Sunday adds. I bought a new Gateway laptop for $499 last year and it serves my needs well. I can actually take it back if I have a problem. Thats a plus.
