I'm about ready to not be able to hold back...

I was going to quit work two weeks before school to give myself some down time before school starts back up, but i'm thinking of throwing in an extra week of work to earn the $500 to buy an iphone...the thing is amazing.

Just don't plan on using it for bowsing any web sites that require Flash. It's not going to support plugins like that from what I've heard :eek

- i'm a big Mac fan (used to be a QuarkXPress developer and Apple Federal Support Coordinator)...

- i'm typing this on an iBook G4, and we have a few Shuttles in the house...

- but my recommendation is: DON'T buy the first iteration of the iPhone!

- you'll be sorry, because:

1. a new one, adding significant features and upgrades, will be out shortly after introduction

2. the new one will be cheaper

3. you may have a better choice of service provider

- just my US$0.03 (adjusted for inflation)

So you're saying it could very well be the best web browser ever devised?

I agree with Mr. Torvalds, though. Always, always wait for the second generation of new Apple products.

Anyone know what the monthly cost is to have it fully functional? I've been more curious about that than the price tag. The cost of the phone is a one time deal, but if you're paying $300 a month to have it fully funtioning, that could get pricey after a while.

That's my thought as well. If Apple is able to wrangle some type of affordable, unlimited-ish data plan out of Cingular, I think that would be a more important than the iPhone itself.

Regardless of his background...that is an over site on my part for sure. Just look at any apple product in the last ten years and, well...he already told us.

It's awesome for security, not so awesome if you want to do things like look at YouTube, or anything else with flash content

I've also heard bad things about the keyboard on it, I would definitely second waiting for the next release since the bugs should be worked out by then.

Depending on what kind of deal Apple wrangled with Cingular regarding the cost and unlimitedness of the data plan, not being able to use YouTube might save your ass.

Maybe not if you're on Wifi not cellular. But that's a pretty good point

I have been pondering it myself.

Pros:

The UI looks extremely usable.
8GB is pretty good.

Cons:

I would have to switch providers (not too bad, just swap SIM cards), and pony up for a two year contract.
It won't synch to a lot of stuff I have.
It doesn't seem to have a removable SIM card, so if someone accidently PIN and PUC locks the card with too many typos (a child seeing the phone on a desk for example), the iPhone may be bricked, however not sure about this.
I already have a decent MP3 player I carry around with me.
Cost -- for $600 for the 8GB model, I can buy a really nice 8525 from AT&T or another really high end WM6 phone, and have enough cash levt over for a decent iPod.
I like buttons on a phone... especially when dialing it with one hand, while walking the dog. I assume the iPhone will come with some form of Bluetooth and voice dial, but I don't carry a BT headset jammed in my ear 24/7.

To sum up: Respectful gadget, but not for me until I'm out of school and working.

Honestly, if my phone is going to be that smart, I want it to be a real computer. Ultra Mobile PCs are pushing down to the $800 territory - combine that with a decent cameraphone, and you've got a good combo that can do a hell of a lot more than an iPhone. A better computer, AND a better phone. (I prefer flip phones to candybars...)

Also, I'd wait for a CDMA version (if there will be one) - Sprint's data plans are excellent, $15/mo for unlimited data on a "Power Vision" phone. (I see no reason why a CDMA iPhone wouldn't be EvDO, but if it weren't, it'd only be $7.50/mo.)

I wish more phones would be able to be happy on both GSM and CDMA networks (the i930 is the only phone I know of that is sold by a US cellphone provider that is.) CDMA is a better protocol (part of the protocol are time sync pulses from an atomic clock), but step out of the US, and your phone turns into a brick.

You are right about UMPCs, doesn't Sony have one that can actually run Vista with Flip3D enabled (not like one wants to)? Barring that, WM5 or 6 does almost all of the tasks I need when on the road.

Are they going to make a tiny iPhone Shuffle that only has one button, which will randomly dial a number from your phonebook?

"Hey... Hi Grandma! No, I meant to call Chuck.... okay, bye."

"Hey... Hi Larry. No I meant to call Chuck... okay, dammit.....bye then."

I personally prefer CDMA, and my phone is a CDMA phone, but GSM has advantages, not only in worldwide ubiquity, but also in power consumption and ease of changing service providers.

GSM phones have either better battery life, or less weight and thickness, than CDMA phones.

Also, GSM uses SIM cards for carrier authentication. I believe CDMA has no such support - at least in the US, CDMA doesn't use a SIM card. I don't know about W-CDMA, which is common in Japan.

I don't know about the Sony one, but the one I'm interested in is the Samsung Q1 Ultra. Really nice specs, and a 1024x600 display. Unfortunately, if you want one with XP, you have to pay $1149 (but, you get the midrange model, instead of the stripped down model, that way.)
