What is it with women and cleaning for company?

Is it just my wife or is this a general female thing? Everytime there is even the slightest threat of company, then the house has to be cleaned from top to bottom. After 11 years, i should be used to this but I still don't get it.

Our house is never dirty to begin with, why does it get another cleaning just because someone is coming over?

It goes back to primitive tribal life. Check out:

If it was up to us men, we'd shovel the bones on the floor out into the back yard and call it good!

Take advantage of this. Just tell your wife that some of your friends are coming over and that way the house will always be clean. Of course you'll probably have to help her out though, so.....

The last (only) girlfriend I lived with did this too when she was nervous about job situation. She got in to such a cleaning frenzy she broke about a few items in kitchen (including my coffee maker) from cleaning so frantically.

When I questioned her on it, she thought I should be happy because it was very clean now.

How should I be happy with a very clean but no non-functional coffee maker?

And if you think the cleaning is bad before company. You should see how I had to paint our apartment. Just before we sold it. Man I didn't even get to enjoy that one. I always tell her that if she cleaned and painted more often, I doubt we'd ever move again.

Just don't show up with friends without providing ample warning. I did that once and I am still paying for it.

hehe, Mom and I and ex owned a house together (2 apt) and when he became an official EX I moved up stairs and rented out the one apartment to save money.

Now - you guys talk about the cleaning thing when someone visits, etc --- my mother cleans for a living and has several wealthy clients ---so it's in her blood to have everything in it's place, etc. So needless to say - in our house it's like we have visitors everyday I mean even the attic is vacuumed!

Hehe - I took over the workbench downstairs - that's now my bike space - have my work out bench, trainer - TV, stereo (blinky lights and bike posters - anything to kill the humdrum of using the trainer) and have all my tools and parts for bikes, jerseys, etc. I now know why men love their workbenches - you have all your stuff around you - my space.

And I've caught Mom looking at it - few parts laying there, bike tool ON THE FLOOR laying next to the bike I'm working on - and I know it's driving her up the wall.

STEP AWAY FROM MY PLAY AREA!

Not to somebody who knows anything about coffee. You don't want old coffee residue tainting the taste of fresh roasted/ground/brewed delightfulness.

I think you nailed it right there. I never thought of that, but you are 100% correct. Well, regardless, I don't freakin' get it. It seems to me like the object ought to be to have your place as messy as hell so nobody would want to come for a visit.

I clean my shop on regular basis. Ok, I take it back - I organize it often. I hate to search for a wrench, silicon tape, chainsaw sharpener, grease. I need to know I can reach and it will be there.

Now with three kids and a wife - thats a blue sky. I find my tools often in the house, on the porch, outside and so on and so forth. " I meant to take it back" is what I hear often

Oh well, payback for my old man, I quess

Yeah, our house is never dirty in my eyes but anytime someone is coming over it is an entire clean fest (and yes I have to help. And yeah...one time I tried having someone over with no warning...oh yeah still paying for that...

That's why they invented girls night out. Thanks to this wonderful invention, the house does not have to be cleaned to the point it is a sterile environment. The ladies can go out on the town, check out all the cyclists butts, drink a few brews, have a few laughs, and come home all happy and not knowing what kind of slobs we men are

And woe be unto the boys if the wife is deep into a cleaning terror and have the audacity to have their craniums anchored to a LCD screen playing video games. Me? I locate the closest safe escape route and start for it. Frontdoor, backdoor, window. Whatever it takes. I've tried to save the boys but they ignore me and get caught by the cleaning vortex.

I will admit - I clean nothing. NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING - not even my bike, not my biking shoes - NOTHING. But there are always clean. How do I achieve this wonderful state of being you ask or am I the perpetual slob?

Ha, I have found Nirvana in living in a country where they believe people at our income level really should never clean anything but hire someone to do it as a way to help the local economy. We, being grateful guest to the beautiful country have gone above and beyond and have TWO full time people to take care of us.

It is a sacrifice but someone has to do it. Our house is ready for guest every day. It truly is incredible. Heck, even Silky the wonder dog gets cleaned up once a week and his hair trimmed every month.

I am almost feeling decadent...
