    Song Title.............

During the sixties or seventies there was a song about a dog washing out to sea. Does anybody remember the title or artist? Yes, it was a pop/top 40 song.

Probably not the right song. This not a song actuallly about a dog but uses the term "Salty Dog" to refer to a beloved ship.

"A Salty Dog" by Procol Harum

    lyrics by Keith Reid

"All hands on deck! We've run afloat!"
    I heard the captain cry
"Explore the ship! Replace the cook!
    Let no one leave alive!"
Across the straits, around the horn
    How far can sailors fly?
A twisted path, our tortured course
    And no one left alive

We sailed for parts unknown to man
Where ships come home to die
No lofty peak, nor fortress bold
    Could match our captain's eye
    Upon the seventh sea-sick day
We made our port of call
A sand so white, and sea so blue
    No mortal place at all

We fired the guns and burned the mast
And rowed from ship to shore
The captain cried, we sailors wept
Our tears were tears of joy
Now many moons and many Junes
Have passed since we made land
    Salty Dog, the seaman's log
Your witness in my own hand
Would you like a dream with that?

Guys, thanks for the help. The site suggested by 'Path' is great but I cant remember the title or artist so it is a bit overwhelming.

    Thanks for any further input.

I bet you're thinking of "Shannon" by Henry Gross

    Chorus (pretty close)
Shannon is gone I think she's drifting off to sea.
She always loved to swim away.
Maybe she'll find an island, with a shady tree.
Just like the one in our back yard.

And absolutely one of the very best album covers ever. Modeled after the Player's cigarette package, if I recall correctly:

Thanks. I was thinking about 'Shannon'. Everybody here is about thirty years younger than me and thinks I am crazy, and that there is no such song.

    Thanks again.

    Here's the whole song.

    SHANNON
WORDS AND MUSIC BY HENRY GROSS
    @1976 BLENDINGWELL, ASCAP

    ANOTHER DAY IS AT END
    MAMA SAYS SHE'S TIRED AGAIN
NO ONE CAN EVEN BEGIN TO TELL HER

I HARDLY KNOW WHAT TO SAY
BUT MAYBE IT'S BETTER THAT WAY
IF PAPA WERE HERE I'M SURE HE'D TELL HER

SHANNON IS GONE I HOPE SHE'S DRIFTING OUT TO SEA
SHE ALWAYS LOVED TO SWIM AWAY
MAYBE SHE'LL FIND AN ISLAND WITH A SHADY TREE
JUST LIKE THE ONE IN OUR BACKYARD

MAMA TRIES HARD TO PRETEND THINGS WILL GET
    BETTER AGAIN
SOMEHOW SHE'S KEEPING IT ALL INSIDE HER

BUT FINALLY THE TEARS FILL OUR EYES
AND I KNOW THAT SOMEWHERE TONIGHT
SHE KNOWS HOW MUCH WE REALLY MISS HER

SHANNON IS GONE I HOPE SHE'S DRIFTING OUT TO SEA
SHE ALWAYS LOVED TO SWIM AWAY
MAYBE SHE'LL FIND AN ISLAND WITH A SHADY TREE
JUST LIKE THE ONE IN OUR BACKYARD
