Pathetic or what?

Here's the first guy in line to buy an iPhone at the Apple Store in NYC. Today is the 25th. They don't go on sale until the 29th. At 5pm.

I can sometimes understand the "Oooh, new gadget!" factor, but this thing is a bloody telephone. We've been using them for well over a hundred years now. Oh, but this one has no wires or buttons! Meh.

I'm no Apple-hater (used to use Macs myself), but the iPhone just doesn't excite me at all. I might perk up a bit if Apple were to strip out all of the phone parts and sell it as an 802.11-enabled, Unix-based palmtop computer, though, but I doubt that'll happen.

As for the guy, I wouldn't call him pathetic. To each their own. A giant nerd, maybe, but so am I. *shrug*

I'm really tempted to get a picture with him - just for the hell of it.

Oh my. Well hey, the industry wants dummies like that!

Me, I will most likely never purchase one (says it now...) and if I ever purchase anything like that it will be a few years out when the price has reduced by more than half ...

It's not a telephone, it's a low power full duplex radio. Duh.

The amount of emotion that people put into things is beyond me. This guy needs to be in an exploding hummer. One less hummer, one less gadget-hungry neo-zune-dweebie.

Two of the most most important things in life are health and time. Seems like a waste of time to me.

That guy doesn't need an iphone, he needs a bike so he'll get off his fat ass.

Why get a bike when you can have a super sweet iPhone, heartburn, and no libido?

You're right...its pathetic.

Some people have WAY too much time on their hands.

If you look at a few more shots of this guy...you'll see that he's spent alot of time "camping".

It's his life. And he's on TV and in the news. That's really about as good as it gets at this level.

silly, yes, but pathetic is a little extreme. he's not hurting anyone. it's just a guy who wants his 15 minutes and first crack at something new. people line up for star wars, PS2, xbox, concert tickets, etc. all the time.

And the media will make as big a deal out of this as they did with Paris and all the others who contribute to "non-news." With all the crap that's going down in the world, as well as the really good stuff (when's the last time you saw anything on the news about using bikes to raise charity funds or to give city kids something to do and learn by teaching them mechanical skills?), you'd think someone, somewhere would get their priorities straight.

I am sure that each of the networks will have a segment on tonight's news about this guy and the whole iPhone thing.

Sorry- my cynicism's showing...

I am still enough of a geek that I don't find this "pathetic", but have moved on enough that I find it extremely silly. The worst I heard of was the dad and his son who flew to Japan for the opening of the first Apple Store in Tokyo. They'd never been to Japan before, but they didn't do ANYTHING else... they just flew in, waited first in line for the store for a day, bought some stuff, went back to the airport, and flew home.

I have a friend that's a manager for a Best-Buy. When the new game systems came out last fall people sat up tents along the front of the building days ahead of time. They really don't like it but they don't stop them. Then some of them complained to him and later wrote Best-Buy corp. about people cutting in front of them. Like the store has any reason to police camping waiters.

If Apple were paying someone to be first in line it wouldn't be that guy. And yes, he really does need to ride a bike. Get a job and move out of his mom's house, then get a bike. Then the iPhone. Then maybe he'll score with the ladies. He's going about it backwards.
