Mary Tyler Moore & the Sign Of The Beast

So way back in the 1970's, shortly (?) after the Mary Tyler Moore Show went off the air, Mary did a musical variety special that was aired on network TV. She sang, she danced, she had some special guests, etc etc.

There was one song in particular that stuck in my then-adolescent craw: A sort of martial dance/march/halftime show number that Mary (accompanied by some dancers) performed wearing a reddish afro fright wig, a green sparkle leotard with "666" emblazoned across her ass, a Nazi field marshall's hat, and leather boots. (I swear I really saw this on TV, this is not just some prurient fantasy from my imagination!)

The song had an almost Gilbert&Sullivan feel to it, sort of like "I Am The Very Model Of A Modern Major General" ...only that wasn't it. I don't think.

I'm trying to figure out what tune that was. Bonus points if you can find it on YouTube!

It was called "Mary's Incredible Dream".

From Wikipedia:
After a brief respite, Moore threw herself into a completely different genre. She attempted two failed variety series in a row, Mary, which featured David Letterman and Michael Keaton in the supporting cast and lasted three episodes, and The Mary Tyler Moore Hour, which was canceled within three months. About this time, she also made a one-off musical/variety special for CBS, titled "Mary's Incredible Dream", which featured John Ritter, among others. It did poorly in the ratings and, according to Moore, was never repeated and will likely never see the light of day again because of legal problems surrounding the show.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Tyler_Moore

Can't find video of it as it's locked in CBS Vault and likely to never see the light of day again.

Side trivia: Ben Vereen was also in it!

We can't have this thread without a picture of Mary. I used to have such a crush on her back in those days.

Ah, playing dumb, a classic dodging technique. It might've worked better if we couldn't all see your collection of manuals on the bookshelf directly behind you!

btw we've been getting the mtm show on dvd over the last few years (season 4 should be out this xmas) and imho it has really aged well, esp compared to a lot of the classic 70s sitcoms I grew up with. I have a much harder time sitting thru M*A*S*H (too self-righteous, tho I cheered along back in the day) or even All in the Family (How harsh was videotape in the 70s?). Ed Asner was a genius.........

Mary had a real nice ass back in the 60s and 70s. She wore these sleek black pants that showed off her cute ass, resulting in one advertiser complaining about them ... "watch the undercupping," warned the stodgy advertiser.

Watch they did. Mary's cute-ass pants become the hottest selling women's product for some time. Man, she was hot!
