I swear this whole UMB thing is pissing me off.

Since I got the bike on Monday, I've tried every day to ride. It's been ground level fog, and winds of 15+ mph. Everyday I've said... maybe tomorrow. Then I try to ride anyways because I'm very stubborn, I go up the street and I'm fighting the wind the whole way. So I turn back. I seriously thought when I got this bike I'd be going out anytime and getting a nice cardio workout in, from the door of my house. But this is frustrating me. The mtb is for when I want to have some fun and get some tech stuff in, the umb was going to be for cardio. Now, I have this feeling like I'm going to have to buy a dang trainer and set it up in my garage just to ride.

I'm also very nervous, Just in the last day I've read 3 threads where people have gotten hit. Arg.

/End rant.

pfft Turning back on account of the Wind is for wusses
Remember if you do a complete route the wind that you fought will usually be your friend.

The wind hasn't just been a breeze, it's so hard that I literally can barely pedal.

But yes, I'm a wuss.

A trainer in the garage? Fight the urge.

Riding a bike outside is fun, challenging, sometimes downright exhilerating. Riding a bike on a trainer is exercise - dull, pointless exercise at that.

Ride in to the wind as long as you can then turn around and ride the wind back home.

Taerom is right, man up and ride!

Pheard, toughen up! Shoot,I've ridden across dirt roads in Wolf country with no road signs pulling 100 pounds of gear in a trailer against a 30 mph headwind on a road bike over 110 miles of fire roads! You can handle a little headwind on pavement with an unladen road bike! No sympathy on my end

That way you can watch "Regis & Kelly" and "I Love the 80's" or some other fine shows while you ride

It's not that I'm a wussy to ride in the wind, it's more like I'm stubborn and want to ride in perfect conditions, like no wind and sun. Anyways, I'm pretty sure I'll go for a trainer, try to find one for cheap off CL.

I know Pheard, I'm just busting your chops!

Look for a Blackburn Fluid or Kurt Kinetic fluid trainer, by the way, and not a cheapie magnetic or wind trainer. Better workout and a LOT less noise!

Wouldn't that be around 9 minutes a year with Bay Area weather?

The Delta Breeze is a free wind trainer. Come on over here and ride, Jon. You can draft off me. You will build up to it quick, I'm sure.

UMB is the silliest term I`ve ever heard. The only thing a UMB can really be is a Hybrid.

While I wouldn`t ride in thick fog I won` let wind stop me unless its >than 20 mph. Get out there and pedal, your body will thank you.

Jon I honestly think it's because of what we agreed upon that day when we were trying to figure out why our ride wasn't so grand like they usually are.

The regret of spending money on a road bike.

It's not in you, you don't like it. You like to be rough on your bikes without worry. You like the fun of rocks and roots, small jumps and stairs. This bike doesn't satisfy that need for you. And although you are trying, you are forcing yourself. I would not try to like it, I would allow myself to get used to it slowly. Use it for it's intended purposes. Take it on slow rides until you get used to it. Then as time goes on and experience grows, you will find a spot for it in your riding regiment.

As for me, I love that Moots. I had no problem except for sore palms but I think that had more to do with me getting used to the bars and having thin tape. I love the feel on my bike and I am glad to have gotten it. The only thing is I'm feeling like I am somehow abandoning my mtbs. Sounds silly but it's like going from a sports car to a 4 cylinder commuter. It's a hard adjustment. But over time you will adjust to it and find a use for both styles.

(at least that is how I'm justifying a $5300 bike....

Go ride with Tom and let some wolves try to eat your pink pantyhose clad arse and then lets hear about the mean old wind and the bad old fog.

Dude, you're a bicyclist no matter what you ride. I ride in torrential rains with the roadie on skinnies, ride with the mtb in the same and on that with ice. Wind be damned.

Yeah it sucks, when it's constant and I do get annoyed, but still keep pumping - no matter what I'm riding.

(oooh, I think I just said something quite special!)

Had winds this evening high enough to try and blow me over (ooohhh, another bad reference), but kept on going and really wished (as I hit the headwind for a good 15 miles) that it would go away - but NooOOOoOO, it stayed there - and swirled and didn't even make for a remarkable tailwind going home, dam it).

Such is the lives of bicyclists.

(oooh wait, can't I fit another pseudo-hidden dirty reference here?)
