Any one else captivated by the Americas Cup

I have been following it since the match races of the LOUIS VUITTON cup started on Vs. where BMW ORACLE lost the chance to compete for the Americas Cup by losing early on http://www.cupinfo.com/ .

Part of my intrest is the sponsership of fine watch makers from Switzerland http://www.yachtingmagazine.com/yach...175767,00.html but the side of me that loves two evenly matched teams going for a trophy that is over 150 years old captures my intrested as well.

Go Alinghi

I used to race sailboats, mostly Hobie Cats and J24s. In spite of that, I can't get into the America's Cup between Switzerland and New Zealand in Spain. How is it that the best ocean racing team is from a country that is land locked?

the answer is quite simple - they poach sailors from other countries, most notably from New Zealand. so at the end of the day, the Americas Cup final is a showdown between New Zealand and New Zealand. Alinghi just so happens to sponsor a team.

by the way...go Team New Zealand!

Why don't the grinders use their large muscles, like on stationery bikes?

How could a team in the fianls do something as dumb as blowing three spinakers? The first I understand but the team should have the ability to calmly and efficiently replace a second smoothly. Even with that shock from number one blowing, an experience team expects that. Then number 3?

I don't care who is gong to win....I just love the art of boat handling! I sail Scows, Lightnings and Catamarans, and can appreciate the tactics and strategies involved!

I just want the overpriced nonsense to end before the Tour starts, so Vs isn't tempted to cut into cycling coverage. I don't care one whit what a bunch of idle, super-rich, Nancy boys are doing on their yachts.

Nope. Its right up there with golf and painting competitions. Last time I checked, red won. Definately one of those sports I would rather "do" than watch.

That's how you turn your C team into an A team, and totally appropriate when you are an invitee at another regions championship.

Because the US won it so frequently historically.

Tom,

I owned/raced a Lightning for years. I was laid off in 2002, freaked out and sold it when I should have kept it. Its the only boat I regret sellin. Lightnings are great boats.

Actually America won it initially. They became the holder and first defender, thus the title. The name stuck because they won it every time after that until fairly recently.

Because the first yacht to win it, in 1851, was called America.

I have been following it, but not like I did in years past when Connor was sailing. Really figured BMW/Oracle and Larry Ellison were going to win it this year, but not to be. Alinghi looks next to unstoppable. I wish they would make it more of a match of sailors and countries than of yatch designers though. In the old days, rich guys could afford to race. Now they can't, it takes a multi natinal effort to mount a campaign, hence the United Arab Emirates and New Zealand teaming up.

You must not have watched the last time New Zealand raced Loosing two sails, I think the got the third one out, was the least of their equipment failures. Last time they raced the boat practically self destructed.

It is fun to watch, much like bike racing there is a lot of subtle tactics that people don't see that make the sport fun if you have done any sailing. I think the Kiwis need a perfect race and some light air to pull this out.
