Very superstitious...

Right, we know it's all meaningless BS cooked up in the dark ages before we got the whole concept of "random" and "coincidence" (as much as we get it now, anyway!) but--Is there anything you're superstitious about?

I couldn't care less about a black cat crossing my path, or walking under a ladder, or opening an umbrella inside. Sometimes I try not to step on cracks, but that's more of a weird obsessive thing than a superstition.

I won't jinx myself though. Let other people say, out loud, as if teh gods aren't listening, "I've never been beat up in my life!" Let them say, "I've never been in a car accident!" Leave it for others braver than I am to announce how no one's ever cheated on them. Not me, no way.

And yeah, I know there's a counter-superstition, but I don't trust that knocking-on-wood business.

If I had any superstitions I probably wouldn't have a black cat that was born on Halloween.

Never say never. I know some one that said," I never had a car accident." Two weeks later a deer hit her car and did some real damage.

Yep, and I bet most people who've never had a car accident say that once in a while. If most say it at some point, then most who actually do have an accident will likely have said that in the past. Since it's someone you know, you're a likely candidate for that person to have said it to.

It's all very simple. Our minds seek out co-incidences to make sense of it all, and that leads us to draw unfounded conclusions where there is only chaos (I prefer "chaos" over "random" as I'm a determinist).

I know! That's why I find it so ridiculous that I still. can't. say. it.

When I was living in FL, I was at a party one night, and had a little too much to drink.

I accidentally bumped into a framed glass mirror hanging on the wall, and it came crashing to the floor...

Everybody started cheering and chanting "7 YEARS OF GOOD LUCK! 7 YEARS OF GOOD LUCK!"

The FRAME busted into many pieces, but the mirror itself was intact!

I think Stevie said it best:
Quote:
Very superstitious, writing's on the wall
Very superstitious, ladders bout' to fall
Thirteen month old baby, broke the lookin' glass
Seven years of bad luck, the good things in your past

When you believe in things that you don't understand
Then you suffer
Superstition ain't the way

Very superstitious, wash your face and hands
Rid me of the problem, do all that you can
Keep me in a daydream, keep me goin' strong
You don't wanna save me, sad is my song

When you believe in things that you don't understand
Then you suffer
Superstition ain't the way, yeh, yeh

I think such actions are not superstitious but more of an attempt to remind onself of your wining attitude with a trigger. The concious memory is not easy to recall but the unconcious mind will pull it up unbidden via the trigger. Same works for bad luck triggers unfortunately!
Such triggers are not bad in and of themselves but please wash those lucky socks!!!
