Inserting large photos in your posts

I asked this parenthetically in the Show Us Your Guitars thread, but I'm really hoping to get an answer:

How the heck do you guys get big pictures embedded within the message? Every time I use the "Manage Attachments" feature I get these dinky-ass thumbnails that link to a larger image...not nearly as gratifying as inserting a large photo directly within the message body. What am I not doing?

use image tags or just clikc on the picture of a mountain n the tool bar and paste in the adress for your image. I use photobucket to host my images. It will give you all the different tags to post pics automatically.

also, please note that I do not use a spellchecker!

I explained this to my Dad, who is (without a doubt) more computer illiterate than you are.

1. BikeForums.net is not an image hosting service. It costs money to run a website, and every little thing we put on here costs BikeForums.net money to put on your computer screen. Attached pictures directly off your computer are copied by, then subsequently hosted by BikeForums.net. This is costing them money, so they keep file sizes (and picture sizes) restricted to the smallest that can still be seen.

Those of us 'internet savvy' people, take the burden off of BikeForums.net by having our pictures hosted by a photohosting site.

2. There are websites which you can store your pictures on. These websites have really big disk drives, and can hold a lot of pictures for you. These websites 'host' the pictures and provide you the addresses of the pictures so you can show them to your friends. You can 'upload' your pictures from your personal computer, and they go onto these websites. Then you can copy the address and paste it into the "reply" box of any message board.

3. www.imageshack.us , www.photobucket.com , www.flickr.com , are all frequently used here. Go to either of the three, and create an account. Follow the tutorials, and you'll be a posting madman.

Also...go to some other website right now that has pictures on it. Hover your mouse over the picture, and hit the right-side mouse button, then scroll down and click 'properties'. In the properties box, there's a URL (Uniform Resource Locator) which is the address of where-on-the-Internet the picture is. Select the entire URL, right-click 'Copy', then get yourself back to the message board reply box.

Now, in the reply box, there's a button just above where you type that's yellow and has a superimposed mountain with a sun on it. Click that, and another small dialog box will appear. Right-click in the window and click Paste to paste the URL of the picture you want to post and hit OK.

In the Reply window, you'll see your URL is now surrounded by [IMG] the url you posted [/IMG] . Putting the 'image tags' around the URL tells the message board that you posted a picture. Hit Preview Post or Post Reply, and you should now see your picture.

ps...Direct linking to images on other websites that are not photohosting sites (ie: Hotlinking...I think) is actually bad form, as it costs whoever is actually hosting it money for the extra bandwidth. Both Imageshack and Photobucket allow you to copy URL's from one website to be hosted on theirs.

...pps...BugsInMyTeeth and I share the same brain.

Try to spell it out.

1. take/find the picture you wish to post.

2. goto http://imageshack.us/

3. you will see a BROWSE button, which when pressed, will let you browse for the picture (on your local PC) that you wish to host

4. press HOST IT and wait (depends on the size of the file)

5 once the image is uploaded, you will see a number of URLs that will link you to the hosted image, scroll down to the one that says "DIRECT LINK TO IMAGE"

6. highlight the URL listed there, and COPY it

7. go back to bikeforums, and in your new post, type the following

[amg]http://img475.imageshack.us/img475/6752/sany0242nw6.jpg[/amg]

I am intentionally using a typo here to display the syntax. Replace IMG for AMG, and paste the URL for your image between the img tags.

8. Preview your post, and you should see the pic.

Hope that helps.

A-ha! That worked great, thanks. (Well...*after* I realized the "DIRECT LINK TO IMAGE" part you mentioned was *crucial*, then it worked great.)

Bob...in the Quick Reply window..right above where you type, there's a small yellow button that looks like mountains with a little sun. If you put your mouse arrow on that button (not clicking) it'll say "Insert Image". Click on that button, and a box will appear that says "Please enter the URL of your image". Paste the hotlink that Imageshack gave you into that box, then click Okay.

As you can see, your picture will show up in the Quick Reply (or regular Reply) text box that you're typing in.

If you want to do it manually...do this: [IMG] paste The hotlink that Imageshack gave you here [/IMG]

Putting "Image Tags" arount the hotlink tells the forum that it is a picture.

ps. I'm pretty sure that BugsInMyTeeth's tutorial had his tags in lower case, and they need to be all caps...and actually say IMG...which he intentionally erred.
