What age did you move out?

At what age did you truly (fully) move out of your parents house and on your own (e.g. totally independant)?

    Me - 20

I assume you mean, "and took all your personal belongings from your parents' home"? I mean, if you've "fully" moved out, why use them for storage?

I had all my possessions brought to my house when I was 31. My parents' home is their home, not a storage unit, and nothing of mine remains there.

18 when I moved out of the house.

But my father had a rental property near where I went to college that he rented to me and a few friends at no discount, moved out of that at 22

Moved out and to Ireland for two years at age 21 (or closer to 22), and was by all definitions independent then. But when I returned home to study, circumstances left me with no choice but to move back in with my folks, for two years. Moved out again two years ago, and that time it was final! So, age 26 for me.

Does anyone here stay close to your parents as a cultural thing? I notice it's American culture to seperate from your parents kinda completely at a certain age...I never understood that concept. What's it for?

I have noticed that this is a predominantly male urge. Women seem to have no problem living close to their folks and actually prefer it (generalization, I know) whereas men feel the need to cut the cord and strike out on their own. I believe this is a cross cultural urge and not at all owned by Americans.

This is true. As much as we may love our family, American culture is much less close family oriented than most other cultures. The idea is to be independent, but that doesn't mean we "cut off" ties with the family (most of the time).

18, halfway through my first quarter as a college freshman. I was completely self-supporting from that point onward. Man, that was almost 30 years ago....
