Anyone seen the new iMacs yet?

I don't really like Apple much, but the new industrial aluminum/black look they've got going is pretty sweet. I'm equally impressed by the new thin keyboard, too... it's about as sexy as a computer accessory can be.

Anyone played with these things in person yet?

A link, if you're lazy.

I'm actually kinda pissed, but I also should have known better. I bought a 20 inch iMac about a month ago. If I had waited, I could have gotten the new one for the price of the 17 inch. Le freaking sucks. I'm not bitter AT ALL!

(I shouldn't complain, I do love the one I have now, but damn, that price change ticks me off)

I am eagerly awaiting the release of OS 10.5 so that I can finally ditch my ancient eMachines laptop for something that actually works!

I work in IT, and Macs are indeed much nicer IMHO.

When I heard "industrial aluminum/black look", I thought, "Oh god, that awful brushed-metal interface has finally infected the hardware!", but it actually doesn't look bad. Apple's photographers can make things look vastly different from reality, for better or for worse, so I'll suspend final judgement until I can see one in person.

I like the thinness of the computer (that thing is perfect for some wall-mounting action), but thin keyboards give me gastric distress. Oh well, easy enough to replace with something better.

The prices and specs look pretty good, though I've completely lost track of video cards, so I don't know where the "Radeon HD 2400 XT" (low end model) and "Radeon HD 2600 PRO" (other models) stand. Wow, a gig of RAM standard. I can't believe Apple is actually shipping computers with a reasonable amount of memory standard.

Hmm. Tempting.

I saw these in Best Buy the other day. I did a double take, because out of the corner of my eye, I just noticed the huge monitors, but didn't see any towers or anything anywhere. Apple's got a pretty ingenious design team, I'll give em that.

Panasonic Toughbook laughs at your puny Thinkpad imitation.

Same here. As soon as 10.5 comes out I'll get a MacBook Pro.

I got my iMac three months before they switched from PowerPC to Intel. I don't mind as the hardware upgrade treadmill is never ending and the machine suits me fine.

Now, hopefully they fixed that annoying scroll bar that works poorly when it gets clogged with a micron of dust.

They also lowered the prices a bit, I think my 24" was around $2K, now you get more for $1,800. They are nice computers, after decades of PC's I'm still very glad I switched.

I got a 12" ibook two years ago. Not because I have any particular allegance to apple, but because it was the right price for the size and what I intended to do. I'm still not a huge apple fan, but if I were to replace my ibook and/or my wifes' old dell, I'd do it with a apple products.

Looking at the new iMac though, it makes me wonder when apple will get into the tablec pc market. I bet they'd make a great interface you could use a stylus or a finger to use (like what I've seeen of the iPhone), and the size of this imac seems ideal for using as a desktop computer or carrying it around with you...

I think you want an Axiotron Modbook.

Also, trust me, carrying anything large isn't fun. 14.1" is the upper end of screen sizes for tablets for good reason. A 12.1" is considered normal, whereas in the laptop world, that's ultraportable.

Yea, I wasn't thinking necessicarily that it would be something to carry around like a regular laptop or tablet PC. I was thinking it would be cool to have something like this mounted on your wall, with wireless everything, that you could simply unhook and take to your kitchen or living room couch.

I'm with you on the size thing though. In college I saw a few guys carrying around 17" laptops, notably the 17" powerbook. I always saw those things as being more of a desktop computer that you could take from place to place when necessicary, like if you went home for the weekend... not something you'd lug around with you from class to class. At the time I had a 15" dell inspiron that must've weighed somewhere between 8 and 10 lbs. When I looked into getting a smaller, lighter laptop is when I discovered the apple laptops were the only ones that got cheaper as they got smaller.

You're also right in that I DO want that axiotron tablet you linked. The thing looks sick! I wonder how much they'll go for?

The 2.0Ghz model will be $2279 USD and the 2.16Ghz model will be $2579 USD. Works out roughly to twice the price of the MacBook it is based on.

I hear ya. I'm a PC person but always wanted to see what the big deal was about the Macs so I bought a 24" iMac a few months ago. I think I turned it on 3 times. I was going to sell it and try to get most of my money back but now with the newer models being faster and cheaper, I'm up you know who's creek. Figures...that's my luck. Oh well, guess I should start playing with it huh...

i like the new i-macs.

i currently have a 4 yr old i-mac and 3.5 yo powerbook and have been waiting to upgrade. the new ones are well-specd and at a better pricepoint than i expected

they are still relatively expensive compared to a PC and there were QC issues with the last generation of i-macs. i will wait until the new OS comes out.

I had an 8 pound 14.1" Inspiron 1100 before, that was NOT pleasant.

I replaced it with a 3.5 pound 12.1" ThinkPad X21 (yes, going back from a P4 to a P3.) Then a 5.5 pound 14.1" R51e, then (once it comes... seriously hoping UPS gets here today) a 4.3 pound 12.1" ThinkPad X61 Tablet. SXGA+ screen, too.

My work just got a BUNCH of X61 Tablets, and I love them. My own work-issued X61t has an SXGA+ screen, and it hasn't arrived yet, though...

I'm a sucker for a good old 12.1" screen. And, the higher the resolution, the better, in my opinion.

I love high res...I hate small sized monitors...

that said, as long as it has a full sized keyboard I will consider it as an option...without the full sized keyboard I write it off right away.
