Something Nice! One of our Dept projects - The Memory Project

I'm in a Service-Learning Dept - where some (try 47 classes this next semester) of the classes have an extra project attached to them that's service-learning - where the students give back to the community (many of the 4 yr schools around here are now requiring 250-350 community hours from all their students -- and the hours spent on our projects - anywheres from 10-250 (criminal justice) apply toward that.)

Anyway - one of our Art dept projects is the Memory Project - where (for this project) the low to no income families of Guatamala's children's pictures were taken and sent over here - where our art dept students painted them and sent them back to them. We've started this same project here in the city as well for the low-no income families too - all based on this success.

Check out some of these pictures of the kids and their portraits.

Wow, that is a great idea. I'll have to keep it in mind if the opportunity ever comes up in my personal life to provide some input on something like this.

Wow. I know that means a lot to those kids and their families. My grandfather had a large portrait (photo) of him as a child that he kept on his wall 'til he died. Said it brought back good memories of a time long ago every time he looked at it, though he grew up dirt poor, too.

That is really cool Tude. A nice little pick-me-up for a dreary Friday.

Thanks. When the pastor(?) from the organization approached us with the idea - I thought wouldn't something more life sustaining be more usable.

But, it was pointed out that these families barely scratch out a living - and those monies are used for necessities. Things like having a picture of yourself is not heard of. I guess the families are quite proud of having these pictures hanging up of their children.
