Registering to vote tomorrow :)

So tomorrow morning I am marching into city hall and registering to vote. What will I need to bring with me?

Day-um, trsidn, wish I knew. I'd have my other avatar's eyes just a-twinklin' like KT's or PC2's. Heh.

Well, it just said "Proof of residence" and identification. Not sure if a Drivers license would suffice then

Many people died back in the day so we could have rights such as voting. The sad truth is that you'd have about the same political influence pissing off a freeway overpass as you do by casting a vote. 1 vote never wins a meaningful election, just once in a blue moon a local thing of no importance. It's been proven that elections up to and including the presidency will be stolen, so I don't even care anymore. I simply vote so I can say I went straight Libertarian.

Yep, politics frost my ass.

If all people felt as above, then one vote can make a difference. If all the people that wasted votes on independants voted for Gore, this whole stolen election myth would never have come into existence.

I think that's a silly attitude. I don't, and it leaves in awe that people think "my 1 vote won't decide anything". Well, your right in a way. It will never be so that a candidate wins my 1 vote, and I am the vote. It's your vote along with others that counts. Public involvement is critical in a political system like ours, and I don't think enough people understand that.

It's orienting itself that way. BUt I'm afraid if I move it there, that I'll be putting myself in front of a firing squad.

Lets save the thread!

I say you take 42 quail and some beef jerky with you to the voter registration office. Then register as Merton Explody Pup.

To register to vote for the very first time, you need either a certified copy of your birth certificate or your passport. If you were not born in the US and don't have a passport, you will also need your naturalization papers. Also, bring your driver's license with you for a photo ID in either case. What they want to confirm with all of this that you are 18 and that you are a US citizen and a resident of where you are registering to vote.

Congratulations, phantomcow. Registering to vote is quite the symbolic rite of passage.

Thanks donnamb.
I'm surprised a Drivers license doesn't suffice alone. I had to show two forms of identification to get that thing in the first place.

Thanks, Donna. Been so long since I did it....

But, still, ours is not a "democratically"-elected govt. Seriously. Check it out, and educate yourselves, those who didn't know or think about it before. Why do you think we have the Electoral College? <serious Vega look>

Yes, and I know that there is a movement to abolish the EC....

In principle, at least in NC, they should only be allowed to get an "International Driver's License." But that has gone the wayside in recent years. However, looks that things are changin' here....

Well, to have an NH drivers license, you must show proof of residency in NH. I've got an NH drivers license..

PC2, worst case, you have to go twice before your BOE. <shrug> You have no major elections coming up, and it's a weekday. A pita, for sure, but there is plenty of time allotted before you have to vote, so you have plenty of time to get it all straightened out.

Meh. Now you learn: governmentally-run things, even on local level, aren't always the most efficiently-run things. Generally, this does not cost you on a very personal level, and if it does, there is usually recourse.....

You can be a resident alien in the US, be a resident of a state, and still have a driver's license. My childhood best friend was a Canadian citizen until her mid 20's. Her family moved here when she was 8. She got a Michigan driver's license at 16 just like the rest of us did. (1989)

You've got to prove you're a US citizen and a resident of where you are registering to vote. A driver's license just doesn't prove both.

Whats worse than not voting at all? An uninformed vote.

I don't think you'll be marching into anywhere, more like wandering around a building looking for the "Voter registration Office"

If friends of mine whose relatives were stopped from voting in Florida by sheriffs deputies armed with AR15s so they could better weed out blacks were a myth, then yes, we are in agreement, the whole thing is a myth.

Mich. I hate it, too. But this is life's harsh reality. One either takes a strong stand against it, as few will do, or one simply "knows" but accepts, as is the case with the majority, most of whom have to keep workin' for a livin' to keep their families fed. <shrug>

Start a new thread with suggestions for a viable solution. We've been waitin' for such for 50+ years.... <serious and non-condescending Vega look>
