UNH asked for my PIN number....

For the registration of my classes, I had to give UNH a PIN number to authorize my debit. I find this pretty audacious of them.

Yeah, I was at the supermarket the other day and they asked for my pin number for my debit card. Pretty shady considering what I was buying was only like $25. I paid with cash.

Yeah, get that personal identification number number changed!

On the occasion that I do use my debit card, I let them use it as a credit card so I don't have to sling my PIN around.

Are you sure they didn't ask you to create a new PIN # when you authorized the debt?

When I was in school, I was asked, once and only once to create a PIN that was used for almost everything.

Well it was on a form that I had to fax to them. I selected debit, because I have a debit card. And they ask that you include the number on hte card and the "authorization number". My PIN is hte only # that can authorize the payment, so I can't think of what else it could be.

NEVER, EVER GIVE OUT YOUR pin!!!! To ANYONE!!

Change it as soon as you can; online tonight if possible!!

And report the request to both your bank and to the University's security department and Dean's office. It's completely inappropriate.

    Yep. What he ^^^ said.

I would check your acct now to see if you still have money. And if you can't change your number, transfer your funds to another acct.

I wouldn't trust ANYONE, even those at the university. Here, they just busted a bunch of office workers in the community college who had access to the files. Those people were paid hundreds to alter grades so the students can get into higher education. I know this has nothing to do with bank accounts but my point is, there are scandals everywhere.

I think they were looking for the three digit code on the back of the card, not the PIN.

If they were looking for the PIN, though, what skiahh said. Asking for the PIN is total BS.

Well, I don't see how they could have gone through with the payment without it though. Normally when I say "debit", I have to enter my PIN.

Doesn't matter. It's inappropriate to ask and, in fact, for them to use YOUR PIN. Definately against the VISA/MC vendor agreements and possibly illegal.

Well I am changing it tomorrow. I am going to get a true credit card through my credit union in an attempt to build some credit. 1st Financial bank offered me a credit card, it's a "student edition card' with a meager 24-27% interest rate.
Northeast Credit Union will offer me.......11%.
I can use that for stuff like this then.

I've been checking it every 2 hours. It is 1000 dollars lower than it was this morning, and that's the amount I authorized UNH to withdraw.

You're probably going to be okay, considering who you gave it to, but it's still imperative that you change it as soon as you possibly can.

I know I'll probably be okay. I trust UNH, but I will still change it tomorrow. Ironically I will be changing it after an appointment with my financial adviser.

You can probably trust UNH... it's the PERSON that now has your account number and your PIN I'd be worried about.

    +1

I am shocked they even asked for this sensitive information.

haha I was waiting for someone to comment on that...

Devils GT2, I dont understand the issue with them wanting to know your PIN, did they ask for it verbally?

I always use my bank card as a credit card. If someone wants my pin verbally, I'll give them a number that *could* work as someone's PIN.

Same with goobs who demand SSNs for a transaction that has nothing to do with banking or taxes.

The best practice is to have a credit card with a high limit, (probably hard to do in these credit crunch times), so if someone does stick spurious charges on it, you don't immediately lose your money, as compared to charges on your bank account.

Next time, if your debit card is a check card, run it as credit. Then the number you give them is the cvn number. I have a debit card, but it also runs through visa as a check card.
