Why is my knee swollen?

Last wednesday, I noticed a slight pain in my right knee. It was not much, and it went away for hte most part. The next day I went rock climbing, and that made it feel a lot better actually. It was completely gone for the next few days...until Sunday. Now, it's sometimes hard to walk. And I noticed my right knee is visually much larger than my left, not to mention I can feel the inflamed tissue. Well I can't figure out why this is. I've not done any sort of physical activity outside of thursdays rock climb, and it started before that. It just seems to have come from nowhere.
My hip and ankle joints feel normal. I'm putting ice on this now. Does anybody know what this could be? And why it came to exist?

That would have been an anal probe... which could cause knee swelling.

I've had this happen. Usually a built up reaction to some problem, like your kneecap not tracking evenly or something. RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation), and see a good doctor/physio person. These sorts of things can seem minor or temporary but you could have some subtle problem working away there that could cause this to happen.

If it doesn't go down, have it looked at.

You should have campus medical privileges now that you're in college.

I think it is a result of running the Honda with the O2 sensor disconnected a few weeks ago.

Yes. It's reminding you to replace it.

I beleive you...I was just truly bored senseless at that time. I would go see a doc. if I was the OP.
When I was in 5th grade, I woke up on morning and could not bend my right leg to get out of bed. It hurt like all hell and the knee was about twice the size of my left knee. Went to the Dr. to find out what was up...turned out to be something called synovitis (infection of the synovial fluid membrane) in the knee. Had to wear a pressure cast for 4 months after that.
So yeah...Go to the dr. to see what's up.

Well it's swelling more. THe difference between knees is amazing. It looks like I am wearing football gear under my jeans. I called and they won't get me in to see our doctor until Friday @ 8:30
Our doctor is a close family friend and used to be our neighbor, he now lives down one block. I am trying to get a hold of him, but he's been coming home late.

This day sucks.

Oh, and I've not switched shoes recently, but that's a good thought though. My mom had her ankle swelling up seriously when she got new shoes once.
I don't think this is an emergency room thing. Isn't that for heart attacks or some other threatening thing?

PC2: ER! Or Readycare if you have it available, but they'll just send you to the ER, likely.
