    My last rat just died

I'm kind of in this depressed mode listening to crap. At least she died of old age, not a tumor, like my first rat. She was a girl. Is a male rat a better pet?
Cause that cage isn't going to waste.

Aww I'm sorry about your pet Max. That sucks. The last one wasn't that long ago. I hope you are okay. Are you going to get a pair of rats? How about a hairless guinea pig like Cranks Earl? Earl is cool.

Does anything really die of old age? I think we just stop diagnosing conditions when things get old because it is easier to accept “old age” as inevitable rather than say they died of some simple infection or complication that could come across as a failure on the part of the caregivers or the victim.

Sorry, Max. Especially sorry since you've got the family turmoil, too.

Max, as a kindred who keeps rats I share you pain & loss.

Male rats are less succeptable to tumors than females but occasionally they do get then, but they aren't the big gelatinous mammary tumors, but rather these little encapsulated things just under the skin. Since we don't segregate our colonies all our males are isolated then neutered at about 4 months and introduced to the colony. It males for a more docile buck rat.

I've been doing some reading that claims IP6 (an anti-oxidant powder) mixed with their water will about double their lifespan and virtually eliminate the development of tumors.

PM me if you want to talk about it.

I don't know if this is true for what rats are fed, but there is a preservative in much rabbit & guinea pig food that is a suspected carcinogen. I don't live with cavvies anymore, but if I did, I would not feed them anything with ethoxyquin in it.

We feed our rats a bit of whatever we have for dinner. You should see them go wild for seafood. They loves their fish sticks.

They get Gerber baby cereal mixed with wheat germ & honey for breakfast and a treat of anything from archway cookies, to ice cream, to peanuts in the shell for a night time treat.

They also have a go to bowl of Nutro lite dog kibble as a staple, whish in spite of all the other stuff they get does get eaten too. The Nutro lite is as close to being perfectly nutrionaly balanced for a rat as you can get with out buying the high zoot spendy stuff.

No lab blocks here, no way... we spoil out kids

I don't mean to sound insensitive, but why would anyone keep a rat as a pet?

I think I would, just because it's a bit uncommon.

aww....the sad thing is rats don't live very long...
You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. That's great...if you want to attract vermin.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Rats can be great pets.

I'm not certain whether males or females would be easier to keep or not.

To the person who asked why people would have rats as pets...I had a white rat named bianca when I was in elementary school. My siblings and I taught her tricks like walking across a rope and so forth. That was fun.

    Good question, thanks for asking.

I guess you could ask the same question about any animal, but to address the specific question...

Rats are intelligent, friendly, social, fastidiously clean in their personal hygiene, affectionate, as varied in their personalities and temperaments as humans, they make great companions, they were given a bad rap in history and literature and they are just so bloody cute.

    Any questions.
