Setting up a streaming webcam?

So I have a built in webcam that I want to stream at my dorm. One of my friends told me to do this in windows media player File--> Open URL ---> http://my ip addressort/stream.wmv . I tried this and it doesnt seem to work. Could somebody help me out?

Hi...If you're trying to receive the stream remotely, you need a static IP address or a DDNS service to remotely access it. The PC connected to the Webcam gets a Dynamically-served IP address from your Dorm's server. Also, the Dorm's firewall may block common WM ports from streaming to prevent large bandwidth usage - something else to check.

The best idea is to get a Network Camera, not a webcam if you want to keep an eye on things...

Assuming he is even streaming anything. You don't just "try and connect" with WMP with a connected webcam on the host computer and magically you get a stream.

You need to run something like wcapture (free) in server mode, port is configurable. Read the manual.
