    This ebay buyer annoys me

I am listing a CNC lathe of mine on eBay for sale to finance a new project. This guy is telling me the lathe looks to be in awful shape, and that my minimum bid price is the max he would likely be willing to pay "unless I can prove it to be in better shape than it is appears by the photographs".
I've got 25 people watching this and have a bidder already. What do I tell this guy? The sales guy at work who noticed my frustration recommended that I just stop replying to emails from him. I'm afraid that if he wins the auction, he'll be a pain.
TO be honest with you, I don't see how my pictures indicate a lot of wear. Yes the paint is faded (but this lathe is over 15 years old!), but I know for a fact that the wear points (dovetails, ways, ballscrews) are in good condition.

Just reply, "I've told you all I can. It's in good condition. If you don't feel comfortable, then retract your bid. Good day."

He's just trying to get you to lower the price. He's a cheapskate. If he doesn't want to pay what you want for the item either Stacey or KT's advice will work.

Someone will fill this person's place, and if they don't, you can always relist it for less. No biggie.

Yea, I think this is the right approach. I'm just going to tell him that if he's that concerned, simply don't bid. Problem solved

Well, it's not CNC'ed yet. It used to be, but I took out the old (15 year+) electronics and ditched them. I planned to retrofit it with some modern stuff, but never got around to it. I did replace the old variable reluctance step motors with brand new hybrid 200 steps/rev Unipolar motors. You could have it completely CNC'ed and ready to roll for under 200 dollars, and I was going to. The original electronics are old and outdated, and pretty limited by today's standards. I wanted to just have it running from a computer, which is capable of doing some very sophisticated stuff with the right software. But it's at the point where it's been sitting around for a while and I don't have the motivation to tackle it. Now that school's started, I don't have the time either.

Ah, unfinished projects, I've got a ton of them!

Tell the guy the item is open for inspection (I'd assume he's close by cause a nonrunning lathe thats pretty heavy may not be worth shipping), and its sold 'as is'. Otherwise, he can go f himself.

Well it's a small lathe. Total shipping weight should be under 100 pounds

Tell him that he is under no obligation to purchase from you if he feels that that the quality is lacking and let him know that quite a few other people seem to be interested in the product.
he's probably just tyring to jew you down.

    Three words:

    Serious inquiries only.

If he wants to haggle, tell him to go to a flea market. Then consider banning him from any of your further auctions if he keeps up.

Racist, not necessarily; unless you consider Judiasm a racially heritable trait via the maternal religious lineage, as many sects of Judiasm do.

Contextually, is it any worse than saying the buyer is trying to gyp the OP on the price?

According to 3rd def at dictionary.com, a jew is a person (subject) of the ancient kingdom of Judah (which is where I believe the term derives).
    http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/jew

Wikipedia says its an ethnic group.

No, that would not be better, but the OP did not say that.

On a side note, I did not learn that "gyp" had any ethnic connotation to it until quite recently.

This is against ebay rules as noted. I am always skeptical of sellers who do this. It will probably end up hurting your final sale price.
Also this is an auction, not a good ol boy deal over the tailgate of a pickup truck.

It isn't about negotiating for price, it is about bidders submitting bids and a winning bidder purchasing the item. It looks like the seller and this ebayer you speak of aren't clear on this.

    2 things:

    1) if he hasn't bid on your item yet then secretly put him on your "not allowed to bid" list, then just don't worry about it, unless he has a friend bid on it for him if he were to win it then decide against it or refuse to pay, or bid it way up then demand that you lower the price or something you would have to go through the abysmal non-paying bidder setup, which you can get your final value fee back but not the listing fee, which is probably a pretty penny on that listing

    2) I've had listings revoked by ebay for saying i'd accept offers by email. I DO accept offers by email but i don't say it in my listings. mostly because it takes a lot of the responsibility out of the listing. I'm not a deadbeat seller, i sell well described good working stuff. then ******* buy it for reason that won't work and want a full refund + shipping

short story: i listed and expansion pack for diablo 2, i bought it retail, installed it, played it, uninstalled it, put it back in the box with the manual and listed it. it was basically brand new, a kid bid on it, way outbid everyone else to a sky high price (yay for me!) then said he didn't want it as he thought it included the original diablo 2 (never said anything to that nature, in fact i said it is not a standalone product and requires the original to function), i said oh hell no and did a non-pay bidder form on him and got an email saying "this is his dad, i should be released from this sale because my son is under 18 and not legally responsible" i said "it was your account and your password then, because you have to be 18 and have to enter a valid credit card to sign up, so "you" bought the expansion pack" so pay up or im npb-ing you (i was a lot more polite though, er as polite as one can get). he said i aint paying, i said at least pay the fees that your son cost me by winning my item ($4?) he said no, i npb-d him, we exchanged negative feedbacks and went on with life.
Then i relisted it, immediately got an email from some kid saying he wants the exp. pack outside of ebay and will paypal me a quick $15 thru ebay, citing "services" as the type so it really has nothing to do with ebay (other than ebay owns paypal ) i thought for a moment, if this kid gets the pack then decides he doesn't want it or something, he has no recourse with which to hassle me. so i said heck yes, he paid, i shipped, i assume he was happy as i never heard from him again.
It is risky for the buyer because they relinquish their ebay rights. but as an honest seller, if the game showed up broken or something i would have refunded him.

my point is, err, what was my point? oh well

oh i had another buyer, that left me a negative feedback THE SAME DAY that the auction ended.

my listing said "i ship same day as the payment is received". I emailed him saying wtf? he said "you said you'd ship the same day and my item is not here!"

so the out-of-ebay sales also save you from morons.
