The Only Thing I Don't Like About This Forum

No post count below the moniker. You can't tell if someone's a long time poster,a noob or even a troll. Anyone that posts on other forums where post counts are kept knows how great this is....Anyway,this is about my 20th post here..

Actually, it's your 39th -- click on someone's name next to their post, and look at their public profile -- it gives you the post count...

On some forums post counts are disabled due to people spamming to get their count higher. Post counts can be misleading.

I'm still new to the forum, is there a prize at the end of the day for post counts?

Yeah, it would stink to be forced to judge them by the quality of what they said rather than simple numeric quantity of posts.

The post counts were removed back in around 2003 (if I recall correctly) because of a proliferation of threads about nothing other than post counts.

I imagine it was kind of annoying at the time, but now it's pretty funny to think about it.

By the way, I have just padded my post count by 1 more. [/useless comment]

Post counts don't mean much. A high count could simply mean an experienced troll rather then your garden variety

Judging folks by there post counts just creates message board snobbery.

I've actually seen other forums that have considered not allowing members to start a new thread until they had a certain number of posts. As if the number of posts one has lends more weight and credibility to what he/she has to say.

Visible post counts seem to lead to post whoring, which is rarely a good thing. Some other forums I frequent either have special threads just for PW or entire sections of the site where posts don't count towards your total. I find trolling worse than PW, as trolls tend to be distruptive and antagonistic, whereas PW is merely posting for posting's sake.

Besides, some folks (none of you, I'm sure) might have a bazillion posts to the, say, Advocacy and Safety or Road Cycling forums and never in the Commuting forum except for an occasional misogynistic troll. The numbers are so high here, with such disparate interests, that the overarching number of posts in general might be misleading as to the quality of their information about the topic at hand.

Again, present company excepted, I'm sure.

From somebody who's been frequenting forums for longer than most (close to 10 years probably), I can tell you the post count is virtually a meaningless field.

Somebody may have just stumbled across this forum, but has waaaaay more experience than others giving suggestions. Others may just be post hounds and have tons of posts but really know very little (I've been in this category before).

Post counts give a false sense of experience. Getting to know the frequent members and knowing their experience is much better.

The only time post count is good is ferreting out a troll who just joined to cause trouble.

I think we should get the lurkers. The lurkers I tell ya, you know those guys that hang around for ever and almost never post anything. I think we should watch out for them.

+1

(like that)

Still, someone with 2000 posts should have, somewhere in their long posting history had something worthwhile to say. But once they're visible you will get a lot of "+1" or "I agree" or "" posts.

Besides, a majority of posters in the fine commuting forum are knowledgeable individuals. It's not often that someone who just learned to ride a bike starts to commute to work rain or shine.

And those smart/experienced cookies help out the noobs like me .

It could be simply spam control. Some boards don't allow links until a certain number of posts, others don't allow photos until a certain number of posts in order to control the spammers.

It wasn't my intention to open a can of worms or to say with or without counts is better. The only other forum I frequent, which is a musicians forum, has visible counts and it does help..It helps me anyway..
