Recaffeinated

I just had my first cup of the devil's brew in maybe three weeks, two shots of espresso, a little hot water. It was fantastic.

But, not as good as being detoxed.

I had a weird withdrawl sequence this time. I usually have a headachey malaise for a few days, but that's it for physical symptoms. This time I had muscle aches and cramping in my legs, bad enough to keep me awake. Kind of disappointing, since better sleep was partly why I want to give it up. The leg aches didn't start until after about a week. I didn't even realize it was a symptom until I consulted Dr. Internets. It took a few days to disappear.

The bean is like my femme fatale, she's not so good for me, but so hard to deny.

Hmmm. Coffee.

Are you caffeine-free?

Not in the least. I drink more tea than espresso now, but occassionally get into a mode where I'm drinking 6+ shots of 'spro a day. They usually go down when I'm really busy and end with some sort of crash as soon as I'm able to "rest".

Every now and then I stop drinking coffee in general and espresso in particular. After a while the withdrawal symptoms go away. After a couple of weeks, I notice my life is great. It just isn't as good as when I was drinking coffee. Then I start drinking coffee again.

Exactly, except I think I have slightly worse side effects than you do. It's hard to stay quitted because it is a pretty benign addiction. Also, that first cup after detoxing is the best.

I cant quit. I have tried to cut back. Seriously impacts work level. I don't get the headaches but I suddenly start sleeping 10 hours a day with no motivations to do anything.

Then again I am a 2 cup a day guy. 1 at 7ish (now) and 1 at 1pm. So I dont think I am near the level of "holy crap my heart might explode"

About once a year a quit for 2 weeks to detox. That is the extent of my caffeine freeness. And I try and avoid it on the weekends, but I generally end up having at least 1 or 2 diet cokes while out due to the whole currently not boozing thing.

Why would I want to suffer through this segment of my existence caffeine free? I have eternity to sing with the choir fantastic decaffienated. I am going to enjoy me some caffeine while I can. BTW, only got one cup in this morning, but I plan to marinade my innards with iced tea at lunch.

I take a week or two off, twice a year. Usually once in the spring and once before Yom Kippur - Fasting means no caffeine, and headaches, and I may as well get started early so I'm not headachey while fasting.

One of these days I'll have to quit caffeine entirely.

Not caffeine free by a long shot, but what I have learned to do is drink less, but better coffee. That way it's more of a treat. So I typically only drink it once or twice a day (just a cup).

I got off soda years ago.

Oh man, today is turning into a high volume caffeine day. Stupid staying up till 2am, although having a girl to stay up with does make it worth it.

On the plus side, we have 30+ flavors at work and it's all free

1 mug (read: 2 cups) monday-friday for me in the morning at work. Usually i'll have a second mug on thursday and friday. Saturday and sunday i don't usually drink coffee (since i do get my coffee at work). Sometimes i have a headache, sometimes i don't. I find it breaks the addiction cycle nicely. I've maintained the 1 mug per work day for about the last 7 years (last 2 years of college and 5 years of working).

Does anyone hwew have trouble getting to sleep atnight when they're detoxing from caffeine? I've been having a horrible time getting to sleep the last 2 nights, and I've been decreasing (and now have eliminated) caffeine for a bit.

I was a "pot o day" coffee drinker, plus a few "Rockstars" when out of the house.

THEN, I had heart problems (un-related to caffeine), and had a stent emplanted. I was put on Beta-Blockers, which don't play nice with stimulants. I had to give it up all together ... although I have gone back to a cup or two of green tea, which seams o.k. Lately I'll have a small cup of coffee split half regular half de-caf, and I feel o.k. ... any more than that and I can feel the battle ensue between the "betas" and the "stims", and it doesn't feel good at all.

When I quit, cold turkey, I didn't seam to have any side effects. Yes, that really suprised me too ... maybe you guys should get on some heart meds when you are detoxing.

You guys do realize that espresso has a lot less caffeine in it than regular drip coffee, even though it tastes a lot stronger. Maybe that buzz is all in your head :-)

I can't live without mine. It's one of life's little pleasures. Decaf just isn't the same. I would rather limit the number of coffees I have in a day than drink decaf.

An ounce of espresso has less caffeine than 6 ounces of drip coffee. Six ounces of espresso, however, has enough caffeine to open my left eye. My right eye opens halfway by itself, so I don't regard that as a reliable measure of caffeine. The buzz is all in my head, which is right where I want it.
