How many bikes is too many?

Ok, I have two built up and one frame on the way--been feeling guilty about
buying another frame, because 1) I don't strictly need it 2) I probably consume more
than my fair share of resources and 3) I got it because I just liked it a lot--not any
other reason. I finally justified it by thinking "well, when I eventually live car free it would
be good to have an extra frame or two handy." Anyway, I ramble, I digress. . .

How many y'all have? I know someone who has around 8 and counting.

I originally only had one bicycle. It's a 15-speed mountain bike with heavy tires but I made great use of it. Years later, I was given a 21-speed mountain bike with newer shifting and lighter tires. So far, I've used my newer bike for longer rides in road cycling and touring. The older one I've kept for offroad cycling and used it as a spare when my newer bike was in the shop.

I think having three bikes would be too many.

I currently have 15 bikes in various states of disrepair. A couple of roadsters, a couple of three-speeds, a couple of folders, ...

The correct number is either n+1 or as many as you have storage space for.

I could see myself having 7:
- Steel touring/cross bike
- Folder
- Full suspension MTB
- Xtracycle
- Nice steel fixed gear (summer edition)
- Beater fixed gear (winter edition)
- Carbon road bike

I don't really want that many bikes, but I could theoretically justify all of them if I were in a sufficiently bike-friendly place (and had a lot of money to burn). Of those, I've got the folder and the cross bike. Of the ones I don't have, I think I'd be most interested in an Xtracycle.

I currently have 8.
4 are complete, 2 are waiting on just a few parts that are on order, the other two are combining as we speak with one to emerge.

I am going to sell a couple, though.

Probably to fund buying more.

I've got a few. But I'm considering selling two of them. The only time you have too many bikes is when you find you aren't riding them. Since I got the road bike I haven't been riding the comfort bike or the FS Kona.

Um. I maybe have about 6 bikes. That's pretty much my limit since I'm out of garage wall space for hanging them.

I feel that I'm about at the point of having enough. I have:

One rigid mountain bike
One three speed
One "touring" bike
One fixed gear
One old (1950's) British bike
One nostalgia bike (same model and color as my first good bike)
One nice Japanese bike
One exceptionally nice Raleigh (it will be back home from painter soon)
One go-fast British bike (might be selling it soon though)
One go-fast American bike (reason I might be selling the bike above)

That's 10 (not counting my son's 2 bikes or my wife's unridden bike, the 1939 womens' 3 speed, rod brake bike I have waiting to be restored and sold, the Schwinn LeTour I'm fixing up to sell, or the beat to crap little Peugeot gas pipe frame that I haven't decided what to do with yet) but I'm finding I could live with one or two fewer.

I am currently at three, and I feel they meet my needs, but more could definitely meet them better.

Fixed gear (for running around town)
Road Bike (for racing / training)
Hardtail MTB (for having fun in the mud)
