An actual non-bike schwag purchase-- new MacBook Pro on the way

My poor powerbook G4 has finally reached its annoying end. It's been a good computer, don't get me wrong, but the years have been unkind. The once-considered-huge 60GB hard drive is now stuffed to the gills with research work, music, etc., I'm on my 3rd battery and my 2nd power adapter. On top of that, I'm using photoshop and this cool medical imaging program called OsiriX, and they're both bringing my poor G4 to its knees.

So, with a little extra cash from a correction in my pay, I decided to take the plunge and get the MacBook Pro. 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB of RAM, a 200GB hard drive, and VMWare fusion with Windows XP Pro installed. Now I can finally throw out the spare Dell that's cluttering the apartment, only to be used for CyclingPeaks and for checking that my PowerPoint presentations will actually work in Windows. One thing I'm most excited about is the MagSafe power cord that will be immune to destruction from crazy puppies who like to go flying by and ripping my Powerbook off the table.

Not much, I suppose, but new toys are always exciting.

Anyone want a well-loved PowerBook G4 for cheap?

Good to know that it works for crazy feline monsters... On the canine side, my two MagSafe product testers eagerly await the arrival of the new machine... The new partner in crime on the right is Max, recently adopted.

No, the lion thing was totally unintentional--mutts are cool.

Hehe... I figured as much. I've come to terms with it--if you wait a few more months for the next upgrade, you just end up waiting forever to buy a computer. Such is life.

Max is some kind of black lab mix--with what we have no idea. He's a little funny-looking but very cute and loving.

Though you can never be sure, I think he might have a bit of terrier in him.

    Thanks!

While a definite shock to the system (and a huge drain on my riding time), it's been great to get back to operating the last few months. I'm coming up on the end of my first rotation, which was as the chief resident on the cardiothoracic and vascular surgery team. Big operations, lots of fun technically, great people to work with--a great time.

The Santa Rosa processors will be upgraded to the new ______ Intel chips. The low end MBP will most likely see 2.4GHz and the upper two will get the 2.8GHz units. Hard drives will be bigger and (hopefully) faster.

Personally, I would like to see them able to handle non-matched RAM. The jump from 2GB to 4GB is just too much for most people's wallets (discounting 3rd party suppliers).

My wife is in need of something durable and swanky. She keeps stealing my MacBook. How much do you want? No, really. She needs a portable and I'm tired of surrendering my own. Most of what she does is web, mail, and office stuff. It'll be more than sufficient.
