Ebay Power Seller Scam

http://reviews.ebay.com/Fake-PowerSe...:-1:LISTINGS:2

It finally happened, i fell for it. I have avoided tons of ebay scams, but this one caught me off guard. I was quickly reading email and talking on the phone at the same time. I had an email that said i had achieved powerseller status, and so I clicked it, then of course it took me to an ebay page, which of course wasn't but looked exactly like one.

In my haste i entered my user ID and password. Then about 30 seconds later it dawned on me. I went back and checked the address bar and didn't like what i saw. So i quickly changed my ebay password. Still it sucks.

I am fairly savy on this crap, but the poor people that don't have a clue...they don't have a chance.

Here is the link you get. http://217.17.228.148:82/eBayISAPI.d...w.ebay.com.htm

I am still pretty sure it is a scam.

IE7 has anti-Phishing features, so the "family computer" runs that. I run Firefox, can't do without Firebug

Never ever click a link to a website without hovering over it first and for sites that you know are always going to get scams never click links period.

Secondly always look for your name. PayPal, Ebay, etc all use your full name and include your e-mail address.

I think it works by users reporting sites, so you may have been an "early adopter" of the site

Exactly. A tip for the tech-savvy idiots
Open a new browser, type in the website you want to go to and then log in.
Then if you absolutely must click the god damn link. but first hover over it and check the god damn tooltip.
Most websites will automatically let you be logged in

Fear and anticipation are the weapons of these people.

Yeah, i knew that part, but like i said, i wasn't paying attention. (not good at multi-tasking.) Oh well, at least i caught my error. My point is that just think about all of the people who don't understand it...they don't have a prayer.

Looks like these a-holes are from Amsterdam. Or at least the address is.

They hide in European and asian countries because these ****ers let pedophiles, beastiality, criminal activity, copyright infringement, piracy go on and will almost never do anything for them. Anybody that does not have a policy or has a proven track record of turning a deaf ear, thats where you find them hosting their crap.

+BIGNUM. Never click on a link in an E-mail, always log on at the site by manually typing in the name.

I've seen spam (mainly spam scraped from mailing lists) actually use full names. For example, I had a honeypot account with my of my Everquest 1 character's on it that I used for some mailing lists, and the spammer accurately got the first and last name (of the char name though), and managed to insert it in mailings.

One thing I do which helps catch phishing attempts is to run MailWasher Pro before I fire up Thunderbird. Mailwasher Pro shows all E-mail in plain text (it doesn't attempt to render HTML), and shows exactly what the links go to. Mailwasher Pro also can check E-mail against a number of realtime blackhole lists, including its own database (which is pretty accurate.)

Good advice.

I got one of these warning that my ebaY account was in danger of being cancelled.

??? I rarely even use ebaY, so it was an obvious phishing scheme. Also, Norton warned me it was a suspected phishing site when I hovered over the link.

Be especially careful with emails that warn you of an impending account cancellation or late fee.

Anything to do with accounts/money should be handled by snailmail only!

Of course the wonderful USA will never stoop to such petty crimes. They prefer to revel in more serious matters like varying shades of 'torture'. Sing it with me people......"Ohhhhhh say, can you see, by the dawn's early light...."

Actually our laws regarding this are much much much stricter and trust me i know because i have worked with organizations that shut down these sites. If you are in the business of hosting Pornography or copyrighted files you know exactly where and who to host them with and the list is a bunch of European countries and a bunch of asian companies depending upon what you are hosting.

I think we can say, "Open mouth..... Insert Foot" here.

Much, much stricter? If you are lumping all of Europe together, I might as well consider Mexico part of "America"--- as well as Costa Rica, Nicaragua, PR, DR, Cuba, and especially Haiti.... what a joke.

The problem with your statement lies in your lumping all European countries together. There are European countries with as strict or stricter laws as the US. Asia is a little harder to defend though Japan has very strict laws on these infringements.
