To the poster who said that "language is ever evolving", I say that the word evolve means to advance or grow progressively. That's not really the word I would use to describe the current state of the English language.

I don't really mind it. BF hasn't got it bad at all.
What bothers me very much is when people write "u" for you, and things of that nature.

Why? Would you prefer that the English Language had stayed stagnant in the style of Old English?

I think that's the purpose of the MLA.

No, I am simply stating that the majority of the changes that English is currently undergoing are neither progressive nor intuitive in my opinion.

I think it began years ago when people started to spell phonetically.

If English was more phonetic, people would probably become better spellers. I don't see that as a bad thing in the least.

I do. At least in my opinion. Making things easier doesn't create intelligence (in fact it does the opposite, making something as simple as spelling even more simplistic, and to take it further, does that mean words in the south should be spelled differently than those in the north?).

It also looses its history and flavour. Maybe I enjoy the heritage of words, but its another link to history.

I don't entirely agree. I think "evolve" does mean to grow gradually or come into being. But to "advance" implies a fixed point to which something is growing--that is not the case in biological evolution or (I think) the evolution of language. Even if the whole world came to speak one language, that language would continually change as a result of new technologies, ideas, etc. Hence, no end point.

Europe English
The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the EU rather than German which was the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a five year phase-in plan that would be known as "Euro-English".

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of the "k". This should klear up konfusion and keyboards kan have 1 less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like "fotograf" 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be ekspekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkorage the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of the silent "e"s in the language is disgraseful, and they should go away.

By the fourth year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v". During ze fifz year, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters.

After zis fifz yer, ve vil hav a reli sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi to understand ech ozer. Ze drem vil finali kum tru! And zen world!

Diz iz gut pozt!

Seriously, it reminds me of the part of "1984" when Sime is talking with Smith about the new language and how a person in the future would have no way of understanding a conversation in the current language. Of course, that was when Smith realized Sime would be liquidated.

You make quite a generous assumption that the average BF poster is actually capable of proper writing and grammar.

Here's a good one I hear at times; " i aint got none no more"......WTF!...Don't talk to me.

Another eloquent statement I heard, regarding a women whom the other thought was not deceased;
"she aint no died, shi probly in eh trailer"....WTF!

Is it laziness, arrogance, stupidity, upbringing, etc?

OK I went to private catholic school and my mother was an English teacher, but I feel it made no difference in how I talk, it's just proper to speak as if you know the english language.

I am a sub-standard maggot...but please try to talk correctly to me.
