WTF is Hawaii

ok I just caught a reality show where the question "what is the westmost state in the US" I figured this was hawaii...it wasn't (it was alaska). So...if thats the case, is hawaii a territory like our northern "provinces" or does it just not count as a state.

If the International Date Line was straight instead of making a big bend to the west around Shemya Island at the end of the Aleutian chain Alaska would be both the westernmost and easternmost state.

Alaska has the Aleutians, which is an archipelago that stretches beyond Hawaii. It's like how Everest isn't the tallest mountain on Earth, just the tallest mountain on the surface of the Earth.

It's a state, but it's also practically it's own country (culturally). Seriously, I've got quite a few Hawaiian friends from school, and they've got their own culture that's much more distinct than the rest of the US, even Texas and Alaska.

It was its own country until the US overthrew Queen Lili'uokalani in the 1893 coup d'état.
It's been populated since the third century.

All I know about Hawaii is that the Japanese attacked us in WWII because they were pissed we stole it from them right at the end of the Russo–Japanese War

I have family that claims to live in Rhode Island, but I'm calling shenanigans on that, because when ever I go to visit them, I don't cross any bridges.

Was this "how to beat a fifth grader"?

If so, you fail at life.

Beating a fifth grader is mean and illegal. Kids are our future.

Bingo. And not to mention northernmost.

It's those damned Aleutian Islands. They stretch Alaska out pretty far west...

Usually, the reason why this could be considered a trick question stems from the mental image we have when thinking about these places. I think it is similar to the question, "which is further west: Reno, NV or Los Angeles, CA?". If you have a less than perfect mental image of how these two states are situated in relation to each other, and have no idea where in their respective states Reno or LA are, then this is going to be difficult to answer correctly without guessing.

I think this is probably what happened here, although it is notable that the OP then chose to question Hawaii's statehood, rather than question their understanding of the geographical placement of Hawaii compared to Alaska.
