CD drive not detected?

I have a HP Pavillion Notebook and it seems that the CD/DVD drive isn't being detected. I uninstalled and re installed the drivers but its still not working. The only thing I could think of is that its defective. Its a lightscribe combo drive. What should I do?

Drive could be dead, could be a bad connection, could be a driver conflict. Hard to say.

Was it working fine and then just stopped? If so...did you do anything else around same time, like installing drivers for a new device or something like that?

Does it spin up the disc when inserted?

I can't recall, does the drive show when booting the system (another test, can you boot from the drive). Does the drive show up in the Bios Setup screen?

Here are some things I'd check, you probably have already:

1: Can you boot a Knoppix CD? Getting a CD based Linux distro to boot on the laptop, and seeing that the drive is visible on that helps factor out if its a hardware issue versus drivers.

2: For some reason, has the laptop's BIOS been changed to not show the CD drive? Its rare, but happens.

3: Of course, there is the malware aspect, or software not detecting the drive. Consider pulling up the disk management utility to see if Windows is assigning the drive a letter at all, or pull up Device Manager, deleting the entry for the CD-ROM, and rebooting.

That happened to me in Vista. I just have to reboot when it happens.

CD drive? On a laptop? Is the drive removable? In other words, does the drive slide into a modular drive bay? Remove the drive (look for a locking latch), check the connectors for bent pins, and reinsert the drive. It will probably work. If not, try a different drive (if it's really removable).

Driver issues with CD drives are extremely rare. If it is a software issue, it is more likely that a CD burning app or a CD copy protection app (any video games installed?) has installed its own driver and it is interfering with the CD driver. Use msinfo32.exe to see a list of running drivers. Or device manager > view hidden devices > expand the non plug and play drivers. You can also use the SC command to stop drivers.

Or just uninstall the offending app.

I think it was NERO that did this to me once. What have you installed lately?
