which would be better?

iPod nano, the new 2007 one

or

5th gen iPod (the one right before the classic, kind of looks like it) (it's the model before this year's iPods)

give me your opinion.

Depends on what you want out of it. I think I-pods in general are overpriced, but... if you want small, the answer is pretty clear. If you want larger storage capacity without re-filling your MP3 player, the answer is pretty clear.

Get the flash based player if you're going to use it for sports. The hard drive based models aren't likely to survive being knocked around.

By the way, ipods do suck.

Apple's marketing department, on the other hand, is probably worth every penny.

Battery life on iPods fail. After it goes through 2 life cycles it starts to fail even more.

Battery failure doesn't worry me. A replacement costs less than $30.

What worries me is that your warranty fails as soon as you open the unit to replace the battery.

Buy something from a company that doesn't punish you for fixing their poor designs.

iPods suck because they're popular, apparently.

I have a first-generation iPod (5GB hard drive, physically huge by today's standards, original battery would still run for two or three hours per charge, last time I used it) as well as a previous generation 8GB Nano. The size (physical and virtual) is nice, and the design and build quality are nice, but what really sells the thing is the interface. The first-gen was a bit better in this regard since it did one thing and did it well, but even the previous-generation models haven't lost much.

The current models seem to have changed the interface, and filled the screen with pointless stuff to justify having the comparitively battery-sucking color screen (1-bit B&W for the win!), but I can't imagine they screwed it up that much. That said, I haven't touched one of them, so I don't know. I've tried other players, and the interfaces tended to suck, as did the build quality and other points.

If you don't personally like the iPod, fine, that's your opinion. Don't say that they "suck", though. Hell, I don't even particularly like Apple (the company) anymore, but as of the last generation, I still think the iPod is good stuff.

The one thing I hate is when you have to use proprietary software to load your DAP. I can load all of my mp3 players on any computer, any OS, by just dragging and dropping song files into the computer. Similarly, I am not dependent upon id3 tags to organize my browsing. I can structure the file system however I see fit.

If I were going to buy something nowadays, I would look at a Cowon. Maybe an Iriver?

I'd love to take that statement back in a time machine about 10 years (when every reference to Apple was prefaced by the word "beleaguered") and see what sort of reaction I'd get.

My iPod nano has gotten wripped from my body while riding and hit the pavement tumbling no less than 6 times since I've owned it.. the last time this happened it got ran over by a cab (the proof was the tire marks on the back of it). Since then I have duct taped it to my earphones so I won't have anymore mishaps of that nature. It has also gotten wet on numerous occasions.. It is a little worn for wear but it still works fine, no problems man. So I give two thumbs up, absolutely.

Heh, reminds me of a video I saw once. I think it was for the first-generation Nano (the one where people complained how easily the screen got scratched). These two guys were trying to destroy one. They dropped it several times, then started throwing it straight up in the air, letting it crash to the ground. Still worked. So one of them got on a bike, got going as fast as he could, and dropped it. Then they got in a car, and chucked it out the window a few times, at faster speeds each time. Finally, they ran it over with a car at least once. At this point, the thing looked awful, and the screen was destroyed. They pushed play, and whaddaya know, the damn thing still worked.

Yeah, I think now it's the case that microsoft doesn't have any idea who it is designing its products for. They just throw a bunch of crap together, cut a deal with the manufacturer and take their share.

Apple on the other hand knows exactly who their market is--the people frustrated by both microsoft and pc manufacturers like Dell.

I have a current gen iPod and I like it. Never used the nano, so I'm no help there.
Biggest thing I like about my iPod is I can download images from my camera to it. Means I can leave the laptop at home, and portable storage has come in handy delivering images to clients more than once.
I've yet to have battery issues with it and it's over a year old, so battery life hasn't bothered me yet either.
Watching movies and videos on it is fair to middling at best, but it's more entertaining than the magazines in most waiting rooms.

I upgraded my 2nd-gen with a 16-gig flash drive... 16 hours on the current battery, a few thousand songs on it

How do you upgrade the nanos? I thought the flash memory would be built on as chips rather than a card.

Look dude, we're having a nice chat amongst ourselves because you've failed to supply any relevant criteria that would allow us to help you decide.

You can pout about the fact that we can't read your mind or you can say a few things that would allow us to help you make a decision. For example, what are you looking for in a player or what are you going to do with it? Why are you limiting yourself to these two players? Etc.

Get the idea?
