NFL Network Good or Bad

Tomorrow night is a big game for the NFL, Cowboys vs. Packers. However only the NFL Network is carrying national coverage of it. It seems that the NFL is hurting itself by its standoff with cable companies and other TV networks.

FYI for those in Dallas, local coverage will be on channel 27 if you don't get the NFL network.

It sucks. Should be a really good/interesting game. Unlike that travesty on Monday night. Too bad most of the country won't see it.

My parents' crappy cable company actually has the NFL channel, so they'll get to watch.

I don't even have a TV though...

I've got it on DirecTV.

This same uproar happened last year. That people are trying to get Congress to step in and mediate it is hilarious. There is no specific right in the Constitution that I'm aware of that says we get to see every NFL game.

If you want the game, find a friend with DirecTV. You should have arranged way in advance to bring the chips/dip/beverages. Now your neighbor's not gonna be home and you got no game.

Bring the beer and chips. I'll put the game on for you.

This would be a golden opportunity for sports bars to advertise they have NFL Network, and are showing the game. That's what I'm going to do, since I only have extended basic cable.

I said the same thing with hockey, which has a signifigantly smaller fanbase, and it is doing well. If the game is good, people will pay, regardless of how ghey it is. I had DESPISE pay per view national sports. I think it is a horrible idea...

too bad it makes them money.

How much gas does an SUV use? doesn't matter people still pay for it hahah

I gave up on his old man NPR rants when he stammered on for two minutes against too many teams wearing the color red about a year ago. He thinks he's the Daniel Shore of sports. That's not the best thing in the world to shoot for, IMO.

It's not our inalienable right to get every NFL game on basic TV. It's a business. And if the NFL chooses to risk alienating much of its lucrative market to gain a foothold on Comcast's basic package, then that's their risk to take. Comcast wants to build up its sports packaging and is risking losing customers to satellite to do it. Fans who want to see the game will either shell out the extra money to get it in the sports package from Comcast, will switch to a provider that does have it, will go out to see the game at a bar or friend's house, or will not watch it at all and take their money to some other form of entertainment or leisure.

I that same vein, say I wanted to watch the Sopranos so I could be in the cultural know, but wasn't going to shell out the extra dough for HBO every month to get it or crab to my provider that they should include it in the basic package.

I'll have the game on tonight so like I said earlier, if you got beer and chips and dip, c'mon over!

FWIW, the NFL wants the NFL network to be included in the Basic Cable package. It's the cable companies that are trying to screw over their customers(like they did with ESPN a few years ago)

Hence my statement that Comcast (ie, cable providers in general) is taking a risk in keeping NFL network in an extra Sports Package so they can drum up even more revenue.

The NFL is taking a risk by putting high-profile matchups like Packers/Cowboys on NFL Network. You don't think they did that on accident, do you? It's a power play on their part to pressure the cable providers, but can backfire if fans think they are being used as part of the war.

That NFL Sunday Ticket is on DirecTV only isn't an accident, either.

This stuff goes on in business every day. It usually doesn't involve two 10-1 teams, though.

The weird thing is that I am in a newer subdivision and almost everyone has a dish and no one has cable. I think it depends on where you are as to the cable v. satellite ratio.

Hopefully everyone understands that when the schedule was announced, no one knew that both the Packers and Cowboys would be 10-1. For all the schedulers knew, the game very well could have been between two teams that were 4-7. I wonder if people would be *****ing as much about not having access to the game if both teams sucked this season.

As for me, I don't care. I can watch it at home on a local channel (as hos13 pointed out), or I can walk downstairs to the bar I live above and watch it on one of their eight 40" TVs, or walk two blocks to another bar that has ten 40" TVs and a huge projection TV. Or I can sit in my car and listen to it on Sirius.

But what you have to understand is that you've got two teams that would garner ratings even if they were winless.

The play here is that Packers will get on local TV in their "home markets" of Green Bay and Milwaukee, but not in Madison or other parts of Wisconsin. This is tantamount to a disaster. You'd realize this if you ever visited Wisconsin. The Packers are truly the state's team from the Northwoods down to the Driftless Region. Not getting a Packers game on TV is just..... an abomination.

Same goes for the Cowboys, as they will only get a local TV game in the Dallas area, even though there are vast areas of Texas and Oklahoma, etc., that consider them to be a local team.

The more people you make mad, the more the issue between the NFL and cable gets exposed. This is what the NFL wants.

There's a reason that tonight's game isn't Cincinnati vs Jacksonville.
