My kitten has become one I do not know ... <insert horror scream here>

My subdued little rescue kitty, ohhhhh so nice, a tad standoffish - but we'll work on that but .. then ... there are about 3 nights a week that ...

    ALLL FREAKIN HELL BREAKS LOOSE!!

Good grief!!!!!!! I have not had a cat in several years but I have to say - this guy is wound up tight on certain nights! (should I check for bite marks on the neck?)

Normally my little/big guy is sleeping under my computer desk or on bed with me - he more or less "claimed" me ... but on these nights ... he is soooo on his own. I leave for 2 minutes from my room and I come in finding him hanging from one dam toenail from my desk chair - totally unfazed - one toenail.

He has the potential for being a great cat - and is also a rescue kitty - and is coming around from the outside enigmas - but boy he's going to be a hard one to break of some things (counter tops being one - hopefully once he's out of this environment in a few months and into something new - my rule will be more firmly in place).

He's a small-ish statured cat - with a long tail - and he's got the big honker feets. Longish hair that is finally filling in (being a rescue kitty - he was taken in for a few weeks, then turned out due to too many kittens at that time ---- went missing for 3 weeks and showed back up at the back door staggering and falling down - and extremely thin - and that's about when I started knowing him - and boy was he a little feral boy - totally tom cat too ---- and about to get snipped in about a week and a half. Say g'bye to balls baybeh!)

The problem Tude, is that you are in HIS house.

It is not him that needs to get snipped. You live in his house and must learn to adapt.

Actually it sounds normal. You loose one major piece of furniture or set of drapes for each new kitty.

Make sure right before you leave him for the snipping you yell at him, "BAD KITTY!" Stimulus response never worked so well with so little effort.

"hopefully once he's out of this environment in a few months and into something new - my rule will be more firmly in place"

Tude, have you ever actually owned a cat before? No human ever has dominion over any cat.

Our old cat, Zeo, is my best buddy but, if I want to read the paper or work on the computer, he has to be sequestered in another room. He DEMANDS my attention and lies on the newspaper or the keyboard until he has had his fill of being scratched, petted and/or fed.

I have to agree with Olebiker. I've never been able to "train" or "teach" any of my cats any rules. They do pretty much what they want when they want where they want.

But, Tude, I see that your new kitty is an orange tabby. My wife and I have concluded that there is something about orange tabbies. We've had two of them and they both have/had totally different personalities than our other cats. Wilder when wild, more loving when loving, etc. They do everything 110%. The one we have now (Harley) does the wild, crazy cat thing about two nights a week. No telling what you might find him in, on, hanging from or attacking. The rest of the time he's a calm, lover cat.

This is an easy problem to fix. Exchange the cat for a dog, and get a crate. duh.

I saw a doormat somewhere with the phrase, "A cat lives here with it's domestic staff." Yep. The cat in our house is not MY cat but I have become the preferred napping perch. To add to that annoyance, I am also the target of meow bombardment whenever the cat food dish has been neglected...like at 130am this morning. Stupid cat.

I miss my sisters cat when we were kids.....

    Strangest cat I ever met.

Sealpoint Siamese, and he was raised by our dog. His name was Lucifer, and
    1. He liked to swim
    2. He would fetch sticks
    3. He hated cats
    4. He had the neighbors St Bernard terrified as well

    Like I said, strange cat.

My dad's cat was a feral cat who ate all of the birds that were being fed at his bird feeders. He started feeding the cat in the hopes that she would stop eating them if she was full. Sadly this did not happen but she did domesticate and now she goes hunting with my dad when he goes to get the mail and water all of his plants. And she eats just about nothing except for Special Kitty cat food and birds.

Never forget: kittens fit in blenders. If you could somehow convey this to a kitten, you'd have something. But it can't be done.
