I listened to their Bullsh** speach about what a great year we had, and then got a check for 50% LESS THAN LAST YEAR. I want to choke the people that pay me.

I'M PISSED.

I'm sorry that I sound like a prick, but I threw down for these guys this past year. My boss got hurt in an explosion, and I took over for him during the summer months(our busy time) without question.

Many people don't get a bonus from their employer, I understand that, but they fu**ed me tonight(I didn't even get a kiss).

I feel like they threw sand in the Vaseline.

- from what i understand (having only received bonuses under contractual obligation [i.e., beating deadlines]), bonuses are sometimes tied to overall economic performance [annual profit] of the business entity...

- was there a reason given for the reduced amount? tied into performance/evaluation ratings?

- but if there were no reasons given or no reason apparent, then i certainly share in your disappointment and your colloquial sentiment...

:-(

I will find out soon. I never expect anything big. But, I'm usually not upset when I finally find out how much it is.

A couple of years ago I was completely floored when my boss told me how much he was giving me. I couldn't speak for a few seconds. Then I kept repeating the amount as a question back to him. The rest of the day I was in a fog. I probably won't get that much this year, but I thank God for whatever I do get, because I'm paying off my new bike. Then I will be riding said bike soon after. Man, I cannot wait.

My last full time employer put me in places where I worked 12 hour shifts 7 months straight and definitely could have been hurt in an explosion, and I got to work Christmas day just like it was any other day.

The *******s didn't give me any bonus at all. Oh wait, that would be you.

The bank used to hand out a coupon good for a Honey Baked ham at Christmas. (Often donated mine to charity). Does that count as a bonus? At the end of my time there IIRC it was good for a 1/2 ham only.

No.

Bonus time isn't until March. And I never spend it before the check clears the bank.

It's a bonus, not a promise. If the company does well, usually our bonus will reflect it. In years where things are tight, the same. If you want a better percentage bonus, you gotta work up the ladder. That's just the way it is.

If you wanted a big bonus, you should have been working for Sachs or Lynch or whoever financial it was that paid out $16 billion in bonuses about a year ago. It was a huge boon to the luxury car, jewelry, and real estate folks in NYC.

I work for the state government, we get no bonuses. Luckily though they pay us like crap to make up for it.

I worked for a bank many, many moons ago. Their "Christmas Bonus" was a frozen turkey for every employee. Hey, that's a bit of an insult, but I was still happy to get it, as I always donated my turkey to the Food Bank. So it was a win/win deal for me.

One year, the bank passed out a survey asking the employees what they needed to do their job - how satisified they are ... blah, blah. ONE employee made a comment that the Christmas bonus was cheap. The ONLY change made due to the surveys was ....... you guessed it ..... no more turkeys!

Moral of the Story: Don't fill out employee surveys!

I got to listen how we had a great year. How our new product rollouts are spectacular, customer love them and they are ahead of schedule and below budget. Oh and there won't be any pay increases, we are having another 10% layoff <6 months after the last one and don't expect much of an annual incentive award. psst. and the severence package is changed so you get almost nothing now

I got a check for $20 one year Seriously... the company couldn't spare more than $100 for the shop (small shop). It was the CLOSET FULL of presents from "santa" for his kids that showed how well the company was doing... that didn't even include the presents from mom and dad.

Diff year...
We boycotted the idea of a party since the boss was being cheap (holiday pay, no bonuses, left it to us to do a pot-luck thanksgiving etc), and decided we'd all skip out one day and take ourselves to lunch for christmas. ONE guy didn't think it was right for the shop to walk out past the bosses door without inviting him (we planned it a week in advance)... on the spot, the boss joined... and then he picked up the bill... I felt kinda bad.

I've never received a Christmas bonus until last year, and I got one that was 4.5% of my yearly income. I was shocked... I don't expect one this year, either.

I know I sound like an ungrateful scumbag, but the marina I work for grew by 50%, and my workload increased a ton.

It's gonna be hard to put on a smile today.

I know where you're coming from. My company decided 2 years ago to do away with the yearly bonus. But wait....they only got rid of it for regular employees. At a certain level (2nd or 3rd tier manager) and above they still get the bonus (and a lot bigger now). But wait....it gets even better. Their primary incentive for the bonus (written in black and white) is based on how much money they can save the company by sending work overseas.

Expansion costs money. That's one reason why your bonus was smaller.

At the company I work for, our bonuses are a set amount detailed in the handbook. We get $25 for each year we've worked for the company, and it starts with your first year, and is limited to $250. I'm working my 4th year with the company, I'll get $100. My supervisor will get $125. The courier will get $25.

Profit sharing is another thing. We get those checks twice a year, in June and December. I'll get mine tomorrow. The amount is based on how the company does, how our city does, how our store does, and how I do.

I look at it this way, even if the bonus/profit sharing check is only $10, that's $10 I didn't have before.

BoSoxYacht...Sorry this might come across as insincere, seeing as how my bonuses fing rock every year...

But. Your marina grew by 50%? How was that paid for? Probably by extra company profits. The budget for the bonuses was tapped to expand the company...and it's probable that the company expects its expansion to reap bigger rewards in net profit in the coming years. With the infrastructure paid for, more profit means a return to bonuses for employees.

I'd say stick with it. If you're tight with your boss, chat him/her up about the companies goals and if any more expansion is planned.

The only way to know the financial position of your company is to dig into it.

ps. I've never once depended on my bonus as a part of my salary...I'm in construction, so I know the market can and will fluctuate. This bonus is going directly into my investment portfolio, as a rainy day fund.

Working in the telecom sector bonuses and benefits are fading pretty fast. With that said, my company started profit sharing this year and that will be our Christmas bonus. Previous to that we have only gotten 2 bonus in the last 10 years.
