seemingly random but important request.

Does anyone know of a reverse phone number lookup service for Portugal (namely madeira islands)? No jokes, I mean it....some really f--ked up s--t is going down right now and I need to figure out what the hell is going on. Basically I just recieved a very disturbing call from that area.

Thanks folks.

So, you have a number and want to see who it is. Is that right?

Can't you google the number? If I run my ex's phone number thru google, it links to her.

Problem is it keeps ignoring the country and region code and treats it like a US number....and I know this was NOT from sacramento....the person on the other end already told me it was portugal. Needless to say, I don't trust this person very far, but the accent is in line with the story.

Thing is I don't know what it was about, but I'm going to figure it out.....I already done some research on what the person told me and am now certain it's either one of two things: 1) someone that bought a wedding dress and is flipping out about it, or 2) a scam attempt of some sort.

I doubt it's 1) since they claimed that one of many numbers that go into my phone made an outgoing call (impossible, the SIM cards for those numbers are kept in a safe with access auditing and I have been the only one to touch them, ever...I am very paranoid about my cell numbers....all my calls go out on ONE number and only that one)

So that leads to 2).....so now I am making sure it's what it supposedly is before I decide what to do next.

try going to www.google.pt and then entering the number.

(That's the Portugal-specific Google site)

yeah it gives me the same link as the english site, which isn't even a phone number, it looks more like a part number to something.

Sorry, Cat. I must be missin' something here. If you haven't sold anyone a wedding dress, and if this is a random call to your phone as part of a scam, what's the problem? Why are you even pursuing this? <genuinely confused Vega look>

If you have been billed, tell your credit card company.

Well see, I have family in that area (my family is spread all over the place, but this one is damn close), so I need to be certain what's going on before I ignore it (this particular family member has been very hard to contact for a while...email contact only, but hasn't answered in a while ). Honestly I suspect after all my research into it that this is just a variant of an old internet scam (and the locale a coincidence), but I want to make sure before I just ignore it all.

Well, all ends well....it was just a coincedence....turns out the specific family member showed up at a relative's house yesterday.....awesome.

Pretty much everything here would take pages to explain....let's just accept that things got effed up in a huge way for a short while. Rock-N-Roll and thanks for the info.

Based on this alone, I'd have said "ignore" and just wait for them to contact you again. As you say, might be a coinky-dinky. But, if they really want to get in touch with you, and realize that you are the one to whom they wish to speak, they'd have called you back, perhaps with a person who speaks better English on the line. I've had some similar experiences with regard to certain calls from older folks in Europe.

From what you wrote in the succeeding post, I see that all is ok. I'm glad.
