Here's your million dollars! Now what would you do?

You've just been handed 1 million (tax free) dollars in C notes. Don't ask where it came from, just know it's yours to do with as you wish. What's the first thing you would do? And the second thing...

Me? Someone actually hands me 1 million? Thank them, for one. Then if it's daylight and banks are still open, first thing I'd do is deposit the briefcase (it's always in a briefcase these days) in a safe deposit box, keeping a few 30 grand or so for spending cash. If it's at night, I hole up in a hotel until the banks are open. I'd need time to reflect on how my life has just changed and decide how I'm going to make the best of the situation. Probably the very first thing I would do is have a nice long dinner at one of my favorite posh places. While eating I'd probably make a call and immediately retire from my current employment. Next would be purchasing a new laptop with which to start all over again, then move into the hotel for a few weeks while I take the time to research money and investment issues. I'd search for websites with "Hey, I just won a million dollars and here's what I did with it!" type of stories. Oh, and I'd cancel my current cell phone account and get a new one. Then I'd open a bank account and deposit perhaps 50G, which should cover my living expenses for the forseeable future. Probably my first extravegant move would be flying to Hawaii for a week and doing the tourist thing, but with flare. Why not Brazil or the Greek islands? Cuz I don't have my visa yet, silly! It's only been two weeks! So basically I'd set myself up to do exactly what I want to do for work and recreation, and (modestly) living exactly where I want to live. I'd mostly make that 1 mil work hard for me. The charitable side of me would make sure my family won't suffer when times are tough. Oh, and I'd buy or build a killer road bike

So what would you do Foo?

Okay - not ALL of it, but at least half. After that .... I'd probably set up some sort of annuity. Yeah, I'm boring.

invest half, with help from my fiances family. Give 1/4 to my mom, take 1/4 and buy a house here in whistler, and work any job I want for the rest of my life, while skiing and biking year round.

Nope I haven't thought about this one bit.

I'd probably buy some land somewhere, build a nice little house on the property, and furnish the place modestly. I'd probably buy a few little toys, but I'd put most of it away.

Well thanks.

Lots of people would not haver to worry about going hungry or have to worry about staying warm this winter.

I'd purchase our commuter's society a permanent home for office space and the shop.

I'd pay off the house.

And I'd buy you a green coat... but not a real green coat cause that's cruel.

Invest all of it. Million is a lot but not that much, but it can easily be turned into a whole lot.

Actually I`d buy a rental property since the market is flat as a pancake. Maybe about a 10-20 unit apartment building. Once the unit is rented and earning I`d buy another and another. Something small enough that I can manage it myself. I`d stay in my modest house and probably not make any lifestyle changes . I`m content with my life and I don`t need fancy/shiny stuff anyways.

10 year, fixed rate, fixed deposit with a salary deducted from the interest and paid into a current account. The balance of the interest then re-invested either in the fixed account or in riskier, high yield, short term stuff.

Send every BF lady a two-way plane ticket for a trip to LA and a collective evening on the town, including hotel rooms, then give each and every one of them a kiss on the lips goodnight. Beats twins, doesn't it?
