In the middle of an icestorm...

I've been up most of the night listening to trees bounce off of my roof and explode around the neighborhood. I still have power for now, but lost it awhile ago. I'll share the video before we go black again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgpLguhVHBI

So you guys are getting it now. Good luck and I hope it doesn't hit you as hard as it did here. Latest power company estimate is a record half a million customers without power. Falling trees played havoc with the overhead lines.

We had a hell of a night, but it popped up above freezing this morning for a bit. It's not too bad here in KC if you don't mind riding in 32-degree rain.

Sorry we sent it your way. But hey, it ends. We're now down to 250,000 without power. Down from 500,000.

went through a few day without power last year. Not fun. Got to the point where I had to pull the motorcycle battery to run the backup sump pump after it's battery got drained....

Good luck!!

I've never felt so blessed. I sit here by the fire watching the plasma TV completely warm while so many are out of power.

Damn thats a shame, I remember storms like that growing up in NC. We don`t get them in Pa like that. So beautiful and devastating at the same time. Wish I was closer to help in the spring.

Whatever love i've had for trees has been dissolved in the last few years. When we moved in i shelled out a lot of money to get rid of tons of weed trees, and i've spent a lot ever since ridding my property of undesirable trees.

I'm down to three trees on my property and two of them spent the majority of the last 24 hours trying to crash through my roof.

We also don't get storms like this in central Kansas either. This is the worst i've seen in 38 years of my life. It just doesn't rain in December around here, it is normally in the form of snow. I don't recall rain when it is in the twenties.

If your roof is covered in heavy ice it may be providing an extra level of strength and protection. Don`t remove limbs from your roof if they are not causing damage. Those limbs could provide some cushion for the next limb that falls. Hang in there, hope everything turns out ok.

Thanks for the support Glenn. I did push the limbs off the roof today, there is a heavy layer of opaque ice underneath them, so it will be awhile until i can see if the shingles are damaged. There isn't much left to fall so i am not too concerned.

Elm trees are the worst trees known to man, and fortunately I thinned these pretty good last summer. Still, what i couldn't reach has gone south, or aka onto my lawn and roof.

Portis , looking at the chimney picture,

See how all the branches are snapping a couple of feet from the branch collar? The rest of the brances will continue to break in this same fashion and deposit themselves near the base of the tree. Is that a Norway Maple? I can not tell with all the crap on it.

Elm Tree Eh? If you have dutch elm disease in your area that tree is a goner anyway. 5 years tops after all that damage. Sorry

I need to get rid of them, and in fact i got bids this Summer, but $1600 turned me off. Maybe it will be cheaper since they have lost a little foilage so to speak. (that was including grinding)

It will be cheaper. Get a bid from a couple other out fits to see how they compare. Also ask your neighbors if they recommend someone.

Wow, those are some pretty amazing pics... we got a little bit of ice last night, but it turned to snow this morning.

Good luck man! We get ice bad here in NC occasionally, and my parents neighborhood is know for being wooded. They were definitely some interesting nights.
If you can get yourself to a tennis court, do it. You will have your own private skating rink.
