nascar and bicycle madison/points race

Why is one so popular and the other...?

As far as I can tell they're effectively the same aren't they. Oval track, timed race, most laps/points wins, restricted equipment/fuel, extra points at certain stages for position across the line, etc.

Nascar just seems like a 5 hour endurance race with not a lot happening or is that the point?

Don't run red lights, wear a helmet, use hand signals, get some cycle lights(front and rear) and, FFS, don't run red lights!

NASCAR vehicles make a much larger mess when there's a crash.

If you don't understand NASCAR, you might think that nothing is happening. It's just like bicycle racing and soccer: if you don't understand the nuances, you won't be entertained.

I'm just messing with you....all sports have their nuances that only a fan would know about.
I'm just not a big fan of any automotive sports, but that's just me.

In Europe madison's are immensely popular-- enough so that they can build a really nice track for a six-day event and then cut it up with chainsaws at the end and still make money.

I can't find the link, but a guy posted a pick about a year ago of the wrecking crew cutting out one of the distance marks (the 60 m mark, I think) and giving it to him as they were tearing down the track.

NASCAR racing is noisy. There's lots of drinking.

well thanks for the replies folks - so, as far as the general details go, the only major difference is the engine?

They're both just an excuse to hang out and drink with your buddies?

What does it matter? Sounds like they cut the things apart with chainsaws after the race. Maybe they should race these instead?

Check out botto's thread about the Amsterdam 6 Days. I think he did the whole hanging out and drinking with buddies. The thread talks quite a bit about drinking.

We can't wait to kidnap botto and take him to Bristol for the Food City 500.

That would be a culture shock for both Botto and the race fans.

If you every get the chance to go to a race rent or take a scanner with you. You would be surprised on how much is going on. Nascar races are not timed races, they race until completion, X amount of miles has been reached. The fact that the races are so long allows for more strategy then just putting your for and gas. For example they will run with different set ups in the car in different periods of the race to keep up with track conditions and temps.

Now, if any of you sophisticated urban types would like, I can explain the jokes in the video that you don't (or won't admit to) get.

When you have a 500mi race, it's not just a test of the car and the driver, but of the pit crew, and falls into tactics.

You need to know when to hold back, and when to push it.
