On a second bet, winner gets twice the winnings of the first bet, loser gets zero.

Well wait. What did Happyfeet say? I'm agreeing with her.

You've made a bet and lost. You bet double what you originally bet and if you win, you owe nothing, if she wins, she gets twice the original bet. If you go again, you win, you owe nothing. She wins, she gets FOUR times the original bet now. And so on.

you've bet and won once. you bet a second time to either double your money or lose it all.

edit - it's an even bet for the winner, nothing means you go back to where you started; same for the loser in reverse, I guess

~confused smiley~

i think it's just about whether you look at it from the winner's or the loser's perspective?

I like how you assume I've already lost once. Thanks.

You lose a $5 bet. Instead of paying the $5, you offer to toss a coin for another $5 bet. If you lose the coin toss you will pay them $10, if you win you cancel out the original loss.

Ok, here's how I understand it:

Person 1 loses a bet to Person 2. Person 1 offers a second "double or nothing" bet. If person 1 wins, they owe nothing, else they owe person 2 double the original bet. Thus, double or nothing.

oddly, I think you may agree with her. She's busily typing away in the other room.

It gives the loser a chance to get his/her money back on the second bet.

OK, I had grown up playing "double or nothing" this way:

Example: Cuda and I bet on something, winner gets $50 from the loser. Cuda wins, but offers double or nothing. I take that to mean that I am absolved of my debt, and the next time we bet, winner gets $100 from the loser, regardless of if I win or he wins.

I guess I was trained wrong? At least according to Wiki. But if I had known the best I could do in a second bet was come out even, maybe I wouldn't have gone double or nothing!

Siu, are we on the same page? My head hurts and I can't figure it out.

Double or nothing is for the loser... not the winner.

You only offer double or nothing if you lose the bet in order to try and come out not owing anything. So, Cuda wouldn't have (or shouldn't have!) offered that, but in any case, no, you aren't absolved of your debt until the outcome is determined by the next event.

If you accepted double or nothing and won the next event, you would owe nothing. If you lost, you would owe twice the original bet.

Well, if it's any consolation, that'll probably be the last time he'll hear me say the phrase "I was wrong" for the next decade.

Anyway, I think our way is more fun!
