Does "Uncle Termite" have a ring to it?

My brother and his girlfriend announced a forthcoming baby on Xmas. I'm going to be an uncle.

Tell them congrats from the Foo for all, and make sure they bring up that child correctly.

A bike a year would build up a worthy stable in just a few years .

Have you been an uncle before? I'm still getting used to 'Aunt Margaret' and the oldest is now eighteen years old !

Technically no. I have some close friends whose two boys call me "uncle", but this will be my first real true uncle experience.

And I have no worries they will bring the kid up correctly. My bro and his (now EX) wife had a foster son (actually wife's cousin) for a few years and were doing a great job with him (definitely due to my brother and not the ex-wife).

Congrats. Now you get to spoil your niece / nephew. May I suggest your first present be a unicycle. If they can master that, a regular bicycle will be a piece of cake.

Bah, that's not spoiling. Spoiling would be talking to Sacha White about making a tricycle for the kid...

I'm disappointed KT. I thought you were being sly about getting engaged to someone who had a sibling who had children.

Anyhow - congrats. I'm sure you'll be nice to the little larva.

Oh, I did skip that step, didn't I? Of course, if KT starts with a unicycle, the kid would be worthy of the upgraded Vanilla frame.

And when he/she outgrew it, it would probably be the right size for me .

Congrats, KT. You'll enjoy it, I suspect.

Your main duties will include:

-- Spoling the kid rotten by giving him/her all the toys for borthdays and Xmas that Mom and Dad refuse to.

-- Taking the kid to all the movies, etc., that Mom and Dad won't.

And, most importantly,

-- Being there to fill in the gaps in emotional support, giving of advice, listening, etc., that Mom and Dad can't. This is not a slam on your bro and his SO, not by any means. But I can tell you from having been on all sides of the equation that one can be the best parent the world has ever seen and the kid will still benefit from having a close, loving relationship with one or more adults who are not one of the parents. No kid will ever tell the 'rents everything, at least not willingly. But there are things that a kid willnot tell a parent, but will discuss with a trusted other adult. You are in a natural position to be that trusted other adult. It can really be a help to the kid, even when both parents are doing a first-rate job.

I think the little tyke will be lucky to have you in his/her life, and I think it will be a treat for you. So serious congrats going out to you, my friend.

Uncle Termie!!! congrats!!!!!

hehe, way too many years ago when my ex-husband became an uncle - his nickname at that time was Bruiser (he competed in PowerLifting competitions, etc) but his first lil tiny nephew called him (when finally talking) ...

Uncle Boozer

(totally fitting too)

1 - Spoiling will not happen. I know my brother will not allow it. He used to fight with my mom and dad when he and wife had foster kid years back over that, and I agreed with him. No spoiling from me.

2 - Not likely to happen unless bro and family move to Washington (still in FL).

3 - I totally understand that one. We'll see and cross that bridge when we get to it.

Better that way. No way you (or anyone else) would have fun competing with my late Uncle. He was unmarried and owned a bicycle shop. Not much was cooler than getting a free bike every couple of years, hanging around the bike shop and going on outings with Uncle George.
