How to stop animated gif brain overload on pages

hit a web page, dozens of gifs keep hammering graphics at you
which makes it seriously hard to focus on the content

you already have flashblock, so you choose to launch flashanimations
instead of them launching automatically

what about .gifs ? block them individually ? well, that works too, but
it is easier to

1) let the page load

2) hit esc

bang, all gifs stop giffing

Don't most browsers have a "show animation" on/off toggle?

edit: Nevermind....I don't see an option for that. I thought I'd seen that at one time. Maybe it was a dream.

image.animation_mode is the the setting you are looking for. I have it set for once. I also believe someone made an extension for this.

Aaaah....it's been so long since I'd messed with the config file, I'd forgotten about that. I wasn't actually wanting to change it, just curious.

IE6 has it. Look in Tools>>Internet Options>>Advanced>>Multimedia...there's a box for "Play animations in web pages".

"Esc" works, but it's only for the current page...reading a new page or refreshing the current page allows animation again.

In IE6, another way of killing an animation is to click on the "Stop" button in the tool bar, but that doesn't work with other browsers I've tried.

Uh...that's kinda the point. After you hit Esc, nothing happens. That is, the animation becomes inanimate.
