I just don't get it. Tasers are nasty, gruesome weapons, and they are trying to market them as a fashion statement. Somehow that strikes me as sickening.

Tasers rock. I'm not sure how you can call them nasty and gruesome. Have you ever seen what a .45 can do to a torso?

I am, I've been shocked by enough electricity in my ventures into electrician work. 50,000-500,000 volts is really, really, really nasty and painful.

And yes, I have seen in person what gunshots do to people and animals.

Tasers (IMHO) are good for police where they can take down a person without lethal force, and where the cop has a leathal force sidearm for backup. I was near an incident in Austin where a guy wielding a firearm ran into a place on Sixth Street downtown. He was taken down with by a police officer with a taser. Result: no injuries, and without the use of the taser, it likely would have meant an armed standoff where someone would have gotten hurt or worse.

I don't like them for civilians unless the civilian has had training on how to fire it, and what it can and can't do. Yes, a taser can take a single opponent totally out of the picture. However, in the recent home invasion cases that have been occuring, its usually two or three criminals coming in. If an homeowner just takes down one, the other 1-2 who are not riding the lightning will just advance and pulp the homeowner.

OC or pepper spray is a different matter, because it can be sprayed at multiple targets, but most tasers only have electrodes for a single shot, and with two attackers to deal with, there is still another guy not flopping on the ground and really mad that the taser owner now had to melee/grapple with.

For police use for stopping a felon or someone comitting a crime, yes. For Joe Sixpack who thinks it is a cure-all for any intruder occurances, unless the person has a good ****** at the ready for more than one attacker, it may not be a good thing at all.

I disagree with the idea that you need a ton of special training for tasers. (Police need more training to inform them they can't just tase anyone for anything it seems like lately, but that's a different story.) They are really simple things. But I'm pretty against regular people using them. A firearm is a reliable man stopper, a taser is a one shot deal. As you said, without a *** nearby, it might not turn out so good.

Chemical sprays are something that I have just plain come not to believe in, aside from some very limited police applications, like perhaps crowd control. Having experimented with OC on myself, including with police strength, I think that it's too much of a liability for the wind or splashback contaminating the user. When that happens, regular joe schmuck who has never been sprayed will quiver up into a ball while he gets the **** kicked out of him. For the police who get sprayed with it all the time in training, they can handle it, but it still can't be fun having a possibly life or death fight someone you can barely see.

    changing the subject slightly:

on chemical sprays - have you seen the paintball-style chemical guns? supposed to be quite a bit more effective than sprays with a longer reach as well.

I'm kind of skeptical of effectiveness without a upper body or face hit, especially if it's in an outdoor setting. Seems like a teeny tiny version of a gas grenade launcher.

well, those are mostly used in close quarters, were a headshot is easy. the range on them are pretty good too. Muzzle velocity on those range from 300-600 fps (feet per second), so you have an effective range of 200-400 feet. That is more than plenty.

I can't say I'd like to be hit in the face with a paint ball ***, that seems pretty stupid since it could obviously cause vision damage. But I'd be interested to smash one of those about 1 or 2 feet from my face and see what happens.

I just don't see how they could be so effective outdoors without a potentially blinding face shot. Call me old fashion, but I think 37 mm gas guns are still the best bet.
