Olan Mills Rocks

http://listoftheday.blogspot.com:80/...ls-photos.html

I think Mom and Dad still have some Olan Mills hanging in the hall of shame.

All I can think of is that somewhere there's a very embarassing photo of me wearing red plaid bellbottoms, getting on the bus for the first day of kindergarten. It makes me very happy that my mom (keeper of said photo) knows absolutely squat about the internet.

First off, I always thought it was "Alan Mills." I guess I never looked that closely/cared.

Second, good god that was some terrible stuff. I can't even narrow it down to one or two for the purpose of mocking!

(Though the two shirtless guys with the young girl photo is creepy as hell. WTF?)

I had to carry the laptop into the living room to show my wife the Dorothy Hammill haircut. We have a photo of our younger daughter, born in 1977, with that exact haircut.

I have no doubt that I will spend an extra two weeks in Purgatory to cleanse my soul of the sin of having sold and worn leisure suits. I had a baby blue one with navy top-stitching. I wore it with an Arnel shirt made by Kennington. I couldn't take the jacket off at my folks house because the shirt had a naked lady on the back.

Funny you should say that. My post for that picture was going to be "File it under 'W' for 'WTF???' "

My mom would take my sister and I to Olan Mills for "portraits" every year. My grandmother still has scads of them framed and on her walls & dressers.

In velure shirts, (probably from the County Seat), I was sty-LANG.
For whatever reason, my mom must have thought Moe Howard was quite the sharp guy because she always took me for a fresh bowl cut on the morning of our sitting.

My leisure suit was blue, with red and white stitching. I rocked it out with a white belt with two sets of holes parallet to each other all the way around, and a pair of white shoes that had buckles if I recall correctly.

There is a series of photos of me from Olan Mills when I was very young. In the first one, I am a happy toddler with a real live duck sitting beside me. In the second shot, I am reaching for the duck with a look of pure glee on my face. In the third and final shot, the duck is still beside me but my facial expression has changed to one of misery and humiliation, and there are tears on my face. I squeezed the duck and it pecked the crap out of me.

I'm most likely mistaken, but the guy in the middle:

sure looks a hell of a lot like Daniel Johnston . . .
